Sankey Lake


Bangalore, the world’s fourth largest metropolis is renown not only for its happening pubs, swish shopping malls, plush multiplexes and glamorous software technology parks but also for its picturesque lakes. Among the lakes of Bangalore the Sankey Lake or the Sankey Tank deserves special mention.

Sankey Tank offers it all, be it sightseeing, or a picnic or a pleasant boat ride in the balmy afternoon lull. An undertaking of the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation, the Mayura Sankey Boat Club is equipped with abundant rowboats, pedal boats and motorboats. Tourists can discover the lake by rowing across its perimeter. The Club is also endowed with a luxurious swimming pool nestled in an idyllic green setting.


Sankey Tank also permits tourists to hire boats and sail across to the jungle-clad nearby islands and spend a fruitful day exploring the dense wilderness. The Mayura Sankey Boat Club is open on both weekdays and weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. while the swimming club remains open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all days except Fridays. Entry to the club is reasonably priced at Rs. 10 per adult and Rs. 5 per child for a swim in the lake while a boating spree across the lakes cost Rs. 10 per head. The club also has an exclusive ladies only group from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.


Sankey Tank one the fortunate government protected lakes has enforced stringent regulations to check water pollution and prevent fishing in the lake. There are several environmental organizations that are striving to maintain the lakes pristine beauty. The sprawling blooming gardens in the lakes vicinity are well maintained by the Horticulture Department.
