The city spreads over an area of 53.30 square kilometers with an average elevation of 24 meters. The city is watered by the non-perennial river, Kansara Nala. The 2001 census reveals the demographical features of Bhavnagar city, according to which the city has a population of 510,958 people. The total population is divided into 52% males and 48% females. The city has achieved 72% of literacy.

History of Bhavnagar

The princely state of Bhavnagar was founded in the year 1723 by Bhavsinhji, ruler of the Gohil Dynasty. The city was established at a distance of 20 kilometers from the former capital of Sihor. Progressive developments were made during the rule of the Gohil Rajputs. During the colonial period, Bhavnagar remained an independent state under the rule of the Princes. The princely state merged with the Union of India as a part of the state of Gujarat after independence. Sir Krishnakumar Sinhji was the last ruler to reign in Bhavnagar.
