Economy

Economy of Bihar is an integral part of the government of Bihar, because it is through a progressive economy that a state can become a progressive state. Thus, the economy of Bihar highly influences the administrative set up.

Speaking precisely, the economy of Bihar can be divided into two different categories:

  • Agriculture, and
  • Industries.
Talking about the first category of the economy of Bihar, it can be said that agriculture forms the basis of the economic structure. Since a very long time, agriculture had been the sole source of wealth in the state.

In Bihar, we find two basic cropping seasons that contribute heavily towards the economy of the state. These cropping seasons are:

  • Kharif season (3rd week of May, which lasts till the end of October), and
  • Rabi season (the intervening period between the Kharif season).
Some of the principal crops and vegetables that contribute immensely towards the economy of Bihar are:

  • Rice
  • Paddy
  • Wheat
  • Jute
  • Maize
  • Oil Seeds
  • Sugarcane
  • Potato
  • Barley
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Tomato
  • Radish
  • Carrot
  • Beat, etc.
But, it is noteworthy that the sole dependence of the economy of Bihar on agriculture has lead to its poverty. Yet, within the recent years some effort on the part of the Bihar government has lead to a noticeable progress in the economy of Bihar.

Further, talking about the role of industries in the economy of Bihar, it can be said that Bihar has tremendous resources which greatly contribute towards the cause of the industries.

Some of the key industries of Bihar can be summed up as follows:

  • Jute mills
  • Medicine manufacturing unit
  • Food processing units
  • Vanaspati manufacturing units
  • Kalyanpur Cement limited
  • Distilleries
  • Cotton spinning mills
  • Oil refineries, etc.
Thus it is evident that the economy of Bihar, in spite of having a weak beginning is pacing up with the speeding world.
