Jatra Dance

Jatra dance in Bihar is one of the major dance forms of the substantial tribal population of the state. Like most dances, Bihar's Jatra dance is a stylized representation of a fundamental aspect of life, which is war and battle. Jatras are particularly popular among the Oraons. The dances are reminiscent of the ancient ways of livelihood, when the struggle for survival formed an integral part of human life and sustenance of one's occupational facility. It is also a stylized and aesthetic release of the inherent violence of the human self, just as the karma and the jadur releases the passionate aspects of the consciousness.

Jatra dances involves mock fights. Usually, they involve intricate martial maneuvers undertaken to the beating of the rhythmic drums. Usually, two neighboring villages participate in these mock combats. The atmosphere is friendly and draws great enthusiasm.

Harbori Jatra is a sub-genre within Jatra dance, Bihar. It typically involves the worship of the ancestors. The spirits of the ancestors are highly revered within the tribal community. They are considered to be guardians of the well-being of the villages. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that dance performances are held in their honor. Harbori Jatra highly follows the forms of the Jatra dance at Bihar. It is also performed exclusively by men and has ritualistic overtones.
