Nehru Trophy Boat Race, to be held on the 11th of August 2007, is one of the most important boat races in Kerala, named after the Late Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Held at the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, it is an immensely colorful event that draws spectators and tourists from outside the region, throughout the country.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is commenced on the snake shaped boats, called 'Chundan Valloms', which are taken to the lake to win the trophy.
The boats are decorated with different silver and brass ornaments. The boats can accommodate around 100 people and move through the waters in a snake like motion. The colors and happenings at the Kerala Nehru Trophy Boat Race, gives it a larger than life image, a celebration of life and a carnival.
The added attraction of the Nehru Boat Race is the rhythmic songs, which the cheer groups sing to inspire the teams they support. The song is sung in rhythm with the movement of the ores.
