Puri Rath Yatra
The Rath Yatra is the biggest festival in Orissa and it is celebrated in the temple town of Puri with great pomp and glory. The festival of chariots of Lord Jagannatha, is celebrated all over the country but the most traditional and spectacular one is being held at Puri. Thousands of devotees participate in the processions, which carry the deities of Lord Jagannatah, Lord Balaram and Goddess Subhadra in colorful chariots.
The Puri Rath Yatra is considered very pious and only a glimpse of the deities sitting on the chariots is considered very auspicious. A mere touch of the chariots or even pulling the ropes is very meaningful for a devotee as it is believed to have the blessings of Lord Jagannatha.
The festival is celebrated generally from the end of June to the beginning of July. The chariots with the celestial wheels are taken out from Sri Mandira, the main temple. The chariots are taken to the
Gundicha temple, which is two miles away to the north. The deities return to Sri Mandira after a stay of seven days. This return journey is also called as the Ulta Rath Yatra.
