Tarnetar Mela, to be held from the 26th of August to 29h August 2007, at Tarnetar in Saurashtra, Gujarat, India, is considered to be the most colorful event in the state.
It takes place in the Trineteshwar Temple, where the worship of Lord Mahadeva takes place. The fair celebrates the wedding of the legendary figures of 'Mahabharata', Arjun and Draupadi. During the mela, Tarnetar transforms itself into a whirlpool of color and excitement.
The special feature of the Tarnetar Fair is that it provides an opportunity to the unmarried girls and boys to find suitable partners. In fact it is a marriage mart primarily for the local tribes, the 'Kolis', who come to the fair to find themselves suitable brides.
If a lady stops to talk to any man in the fair it sends the signal that she has chosen him as her husband. The bachelors are instantly distinguishable in their decorated umbrellas and distinct hairstyles.
There is a 'Kund' (reservoir) there, which is considered to be as sacred as the river Ganga, a dip in which can release one of all sins.
The added attraction of the Tarnetar Fair Gujarat are the Tarnetar chattris. The decorations and the embroideries on them are worth seeing. The folk dance performed by the local tribes offer visitors a visual treat along with the enchanting music and rhythmic dance.
