The Urs Fair is dedicated to the Sufi saint, Khwaja Moin- Ud- Din Chisti. It takes place every year on the death anniversary of the saint, during the first six days of the Islamic calendar, that is known as Rajab. The event takes place near the lake side city of Ajmer, Rajasthan, where the memorial of the holy saint is situated, known by the name of 'Chisti Ki Dargah'.
It is believed that that the saint came from Persia and worked for the betterment of the poor people, which has given him the name 'Gharib Nawaz', protector of the poor. He lived a simple and plain life and died in solitude.
Every year lakhs of deevotees from different parts of the country come to the holy shrine , during the Urs Fair, Ajmer, Rajasthan, to pay respect and offer prayers, to the Khwaja on his death anniversary. People make their offerings to the Khwaja, that includes rose and jasmine flowers, perfumes, sandalwood paste, incense and more. People who have their wishes fulfilled, offer chaddars, neema and gilaph at the Dargah. The fair also includes the traditional singers called the Qawwals, who sing throughout in praise of the saint. Mushairaas, the evening poetic verses performed by the Shayars, the poets, is the added attraction of the Urs Fair.
The last day of the fair is marked by the opening of the gate 'Jannati Darwaza' (The gateway of heaven). It is believed, that if the gateway is crossed for seven times in the early morning, it will ensure one's safe passage to the heaven. The interesting ritual of the 'Kheer' (milk pudding), being served to all the devotees on the day, as 'Tabarruk', the blessed food, is an interesting event in the fair.
