Indian National Congress in chhattisgarh

The Indian National Congress in Chhattisgarh forms the chief opposition party in the state legislative assembly. The Chhatisgarh national party was unable to procure the majority of votes in the elections of the state in the year 2003 and had lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party, which formed the government in Chhattisgarh state.

The Indian National Congress was the first political party formed in the country. The national party has grown since independence and has held power in separate states and in the union government for a long time. The powers of the national party in the state of Chhattisgarh were however limited by the majority of another national political party, the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Indian National Congress of Chhattisgarh contested for the total of 90 seats in the state legislative assembly in the elections of the year 2003. The party was able to procure 37 seats after receiving 3543754 votes in total. The Indian National Congress of Chhattisgarh has won 36.71% vote in the year 2003. As opposed to the Indian National Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 50 seats.

Some of the leaders of the Indian National Congress in Chhattisgarh who had contested elections and are the winning candidates in Chhattisgarh are Kawasi Lakhma who won from the schedule tribe Konta constituency, Dr. Chetan Verma from the Bemetara constituency, Tamradhwaj Sahu hailing from the Dhamdha constituency, Udai Mudliyar from the Rajnandgaon constituency, Dr Shiv Kumar Dahria who won from the schedule caste constituency of Pallari, Ajit Jogi from the Marwahi constituency and Moti Lal from the Champa constituency.
