The Chhattisgarh national parties comprise chiefly of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress. The state also has several other political parties of national importance contesting elections in the state of Chhattisgarh.
After the elections of 2003, the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the political party with the majority of votes in the state of Chhattisgarh. The Bharatiya Janata Party was formed in 1980 as an independent party after it broke its alliance with the Janata Party. Since then the party has emerged as a major political party in many states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Haryana and in the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. The party has the support of the tribal community that forms 32 percent of the population in the state of Chhattisgarh. The leaders of the tribal communities occupy 85 blocks of the 146 in the state. Of the 34 seats that belong to the tribal community in the legislative assembly of the state, 26 of them are occupied by the supporters of the Baratiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh. Seven other tribal seats are occupied by supporters of the Indian National Congress.
The Indian National Congress is the oldest political national party of the country. The party has contested elections and won only a few seats in the Chhattisgarh legislative assembly. The Indian National Congress forms the opposition party in the assembly gathering its forces to contest and win the elections in the next session against the Baratiya Janata Party.
Some of the other Chhattisgarh national parties are the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
