A total of five state parties of Chhattisgarh participated in the elections of the state in the year 2003. The contesting national parties were six in number. Other than these the state has seventeen registered unrecognized parties and an independent candidate participating in the elections.
The Bahujan Samaj Party of Chhattisgarh with its party symbol of the elephant contested for 54 seats in the legislative assembly of the state in the 2003 elections of Chhattisgarh. The party was able to procure 2 seats. 46 were forfeited deposits of the party. The total number of votes received by the state party in Chhattisgarh was 429334. Due to the performance of the state in more than four states of the country, the election commission of India has recognized the Bahujan Samaj Party as a national party. The party fights for the problems of the weaker sections of the society.
The Gondwana Party functions in the state of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh as well. The party is influential in the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. The Gondwana Party contested for 41 seats in the elections of 2003. The party won 156916 votes in the elections.
Some of the other state parties of Chhattisgarh are the Janata Dal and Samajwadi Party. The Shivsena Party, which is prominent in the state of Maharashtra, also has representatives in the state of Chhattisgarh. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is also a representative state party of the Chhattisgarh state.
