President Pranab Mukherjee started his five-day foreign tour to Sweden and Belarus and landed in Sweden today morning. This is the first ever tour by any constitutional head of state of India. On arrival to Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria received President Pranab Mukherjee at Arland airport. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia later received Mukherjee at Royal Mews and the traditional welcoming ceremony took place at the Royal Palace. While addressing Indian community settled in Sweden, President Mukherjee said that it is a great feat by the Indians who settled and made a foreign land their own. During the three-day visit, Mukherjee will meet Sweden’s PM, Leader of Opposition, and Speaker besides meeting King and Queen. Reports say that the theme of President’s visit will focus on scientific research, urban development, sustainable development, innovation, and increase mutual exchange in science and trade.
After Kargil Martyr Captain Saurabh Kalia's family pleaded for an international investigation in the mutilation of the brave heart’s body when handed over by Pakistan to India, Union Government said that it is not “practical” to drag Pakistan to International Court of Justice on the issue. The decision of NDA-run government comes as a shocker as BJP made it a political issue when they were in the opposition and accused erstwhile UPA government of sitting blindfold when Pakistan violated Geneva Convention on PoW. BJP-led Union Government seems to follow a similar approach the UPA took some years back on Sourabh Kalia’s issue. UPA regarded the matter an ‘internal’ and ‘bilateral’ issue and opined that bringing it to ICJ is not a solution. Reports say that in 1999, Capt. Kalia along with a team of patrol were captured by Pakistani army and brutally tortured, defying Geneva Convention.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed through its Twitter account that former Indian stalwarts including Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman have joined the newly-constituted advisory committee of the Indian cricket board. The official statement also said that they are fortunate to get the coveted services from these cricketing legends of India. Anurag Thakur, the BCCI secretary tweeted that they are privileged of having guidance of the trio at a point of time when they are gearing up to “start a new inning”. BCCI sources say that both President Jagmohan Dalmiya and Secretary Anurag Thakur will consult the advisory panel before taking major decisions. India has won bronze medal in the individual recurve event for women in Archery World Cup in Turkey. India’s Deepika Kumari (9th seeded in the event) defeated Korea’s Chang Hye Jin (2nd seeded in the event) by 6 (26, 29, 26, 28) - 2 (25, 26, 28, 27). The first and second spot in the concerned women’s event went to Korean players. 20-year old Deepika had to contend with the bronze medal as she was defeated by Ki Bo Bae of Korea, Olympic gold medallist in the same category of archery, in the World Cup’s semifinal event. Deepika Kumari, the former world number 1, was the only hope for India as the other veteran archers of India - Snehal Divakar, Satbir Kaur, and Dola Banerjee – crashed out of the tournament in the very first round of the individual recurve category.
Indian National Congress slammed NDA government of deliberately delaying implementation of One Rank, One Pension scheme. The accusation comes even after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured ex-servicemen through his “Mann ki Baat” programme that the delay in implementation of OROP is due to the complexities involved in it. Congress spokesman Ajay Maken slammed PM Modi for calling the issue a “vexed” one and went on to say that the PM is trying to confuse ex-servicemen by referring to it as complex. Maken also accused the Narendra Modi government of not keeping his electoral promises made before the Lok Sabha election including clarification from France on Rafale aircraft deal, bringing black money stashed in foreign countries, and many more. Congress also said that they expect the government to discuss serious economic situation which the country is facing currently including the issue of unemployment.
Shakuntala Gamlin, senior IAS officer, whose appointment as acting Chief Secretary kicked off a storm between Delhi government and Lt. General Najeeb Jung, has charged Industries Minister Satyendra Jain of putting pressure on her for converting character of industrial plots to freehold from leasehold. She also shot a letter to Jung alleging that the concerned minister put pressure on her for submitting a note for council of ministers with the proposal of converting character of the industrial land, which again doesn’t come under Delhi government. Reports say that the concerned land under the lens is known as “Nazul land”, which is held under President of India’s name and the administrative powers for the same rest with Lt. Governor. Gamlin went on to write that she is informing the matter to Jung as Home Ministry didn’t identify Delhi Government as the developer of the “Najul land”.
While wrapping up Foreign Ministry’s works done in last one year, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said that she will visit Israel, Palestine, and Jordan in later part of 2015. Swaraj also informed media that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to be the first Indian PM to visit Israel but declined to reveal the exact dates and only said that it will be finalised after mutual discussion and convenience of the two countries. In a question regarding her visit to Israel and at the same time keeping relation with Palestine, Sushma Swaraj clarified that there has been no change in their foreign policy on the issue of Palestine. While Sushma described Narendra Modi as a proactive Prime Minister, she lauded his foreign policy by saying that it is based on three pillars of “contact, dialogue, and results” and India has established contact with 101 countries.
Markit compiled headline HSBC India Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) shows that in the month of May 2015, PMI increased to 52.6, which is the fastest since January 2015. Reports say that this has been possible due to surge in domestic demand along with increase in new orders and levels of production. The PMI data, released today, comes a day ahead of the scheduled announcement of RBI’s monetary policy review. Analysts say that this data will put more pressure on RBI to cut rates for boosting manufacturing sector growth and investment flow. Markit Economist Pollyanna De Lima observed that “rise in export orders lost traction” and the job market in manufacturing sector remains stagnant despite upturn in PMI due to uncertainty on growth sustainability. The report says that in spite of the moderate overseas orders, new orders for manufacturing surged for the nineteenth successive month.
Finance Ministry has brought two new simplified Income Tax Return forms (ITR 2 and ITR 2A) having just three pages. Reports say that the last date of submitting the forms has been extended to 31 August 2015. The new ITR 2A form will have to be filled in by a Hindu Undivided Family or individual who don’t have income from foreign assets or businesses/professions and capital gains. Instead of the controversial provision of disclosing foreign trips and involved expenditure, the new provision will only require disclosure of passport number. The Finance Ministry statement also said that balance in bank accounts will not have to be furnished in the new ITR forms and instead the assessee only has to provide IFS Code of the bank along with the account number (current/savings). Return filing date has been extended as software for filing is still under preparation.
