The Supreme Court has given its consent to look into the plea for an open court hearing on curative petitions which has been submitted by gay rights activists against the court’s judgment which criminalized homosexuality. The Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice P Sathasivam agreed to the plea put forward by lawyers representing different parties. Curative petition is considered in closed chambers by the judges and no party is allowed to present its arguments in such cases. In fact this is the last judicial step which can be taken regarding any verdict. The petition was filed by different parties which include NGO Naz Foundation which has been at the forefront representing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. The petition specifies about an error in judgment passed on December 11 as the basis was an old law and it did not consider the various amendments which took place in the law from the time it was reserved for judgment that is March 27, 2012. Also it was stated that this case should have been dealt by the Constitution bench rather than bench of two judges.
The residence proof of Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president has been cancelled by the local administration at Amethi. It was also stated that he was not even an occasional resident. The district magistrate Jagatraj Tripathi stated that the application for the domicile certificate was not done by Rahul Gandhi himself and the applications did not carry his signature. It was made by Rajendra Singh, the spokesperson for the Congress at Amethi. This has been termed as not in accordance with the law. The DM stated that Rahul Gandhi should apply in person or send the requisite documents duly signed by him for the processing. The candidates need to open the bank accounts as per direction from Election Commission and for that domicile certificate was necessary. The application was made by Rajendra Singh and Munshiganj Guest house was mentioned as the temporary address of Rahul Gandhi.
The Bharatiya Janata Party with its declaration that it will bring out its poll manifesto on April 7 when the election starts has surprised everyone. As per the reports there is a tussle between the two camps of Narendra Modi and Murli Manohar Joshi regarding what would be there in the manifesto. While Modi team thinks that what the other team has prepared does not have the development factor in it and so has pointed out that some changes be done in it. As is the trend poll manifesto is unveiled much ahead the elections as it specifies what the party would do if voted to power. Delhi specific manifesto has already been released and today it released the North East region manifesto wherein it was stated that BPO hub will be developed if the party comes to power. In Delhi manifesto things like offering statehood, 30% reduction of power tariff, helpline for lodging complaints of corruption and curbing prices in a month of being voted to power has been mentioned.
AAP has edged past the other major parties in the number of candidates fielded for the Lok Sabha polls as it has 426 contestants in the fray whereas BJP will field 415 candidates and Congress has 414. Along with this the candidates have been informed that not much will be done for their campaign as is the case with other parties. AAP has also stated that party chief may not be available for all their campaigns and there won’t be funds for campaigning. AAP candidates have requested for one rally by Kejriwal in their constituencies. In fact a helicopter would also be arranged in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh so that Kejriwal can fly from Delhi. It seems difficult on part of the AAP chief to visit all the constituencies as the main emphasis is on Delhi-NCR region. He is yet to tour Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and the North East. There is fund crunch as well and there is only 20 crore lying with the party so the candidates have been asked to arrange for themselves. The aim for fielding more than 400 candidates was to register AAP as a national party. This requires 6% of the total votes accumulated in minimum of 4 states and 4 members in the Lok Sabha.
The Sahara Group has conveyed to the Supreme Court that it would be difficult for it to pay Rs. 10,000 crore so that its chief Subrata Roy and its two directors can be released on bail. They have been staying in jail since March 4. The apex court bench of justice KS Radhakrishnan and justice JS Khehar were informed that they will be able to pay Rs. 2,500 crore on immediate basis and Rs. 2,500 crore in cash in three weeks when Roy and his two directors will be released. The SC had on March 26 have stated that they will be released when Sahara group had deposited Rs 10000 crore which were to be deposited in cash and guarantees. Out of this Rs. 5000 crore were to be deposited in cash with SEBI and furnish bank guarantees for another Rs. 5000 crore.
The Mudgal Report which has been secret till date is finally out. It had added to the suspense in the legal battle which ensued between the Supreme Court and BCCI. In fact recently the court had stated that there were some grave allegations there in the report and so it was absolutely essential for N Srinivasan to step down for fair trial to continue. After this Srinivasan stepped down and Gavaskar was made the interim president. What was there in the report was in the knowledge of only the apex court and the Mudgal Commission. There were speculations that there may have been names of 6 players or even more in the report. As per the Indian Express there may be names of 12-13 players and that they may be from Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings as well as three other teams. That means 5 teams may be involved in the scandal. Secondly the report is said to have mentioned names of the top office bearers of IPL as well. It has been also stated in the sealed envelope that thorough investigation should be carried regarding the names mentioned as the allegations were yet to be substantiated.
