A division bench of Justice Reva Khetrapal, and Justice Pratibha Rani of the Delhi High Court today reserved its order regarding the confirmation of the death sentence of the four accused in the Delhi gangrape case. The prosecution and the defence counsels have completed their arguments. The court directed the defence counsels to submit by January 15 their written submissions. The 23 year old physiotherapy intern was brutally gangraped and assaulted in a moving bus and was then left on the road to die along with her male friend who was also mercilessly beaten. The intern died on December 29. Out of the ix accused one hanged himself in the prison cell and another was sent to a reform home by the Juvenile Justice Board for three years. Trial court pronounced death sentence to the four accused on September 13 and referred the matter to the higher court for the confirmation of the sentence.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed the third press conference in his two terms. Therein he stated that he will be not opting for the third term in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and also specified that it would be disastrous if Narendra Modi was to be the PM of India and the country did not require such a leader. He was strong in his criticism and slammed Modi by saying that a strong Prime Minister did not mean the one who was responsible for the killing of innocent people. Singh also said that he will be handing over the responsibility to a young prime minister though he did not say a word about who would be the prime minister. In the same breath he said that Rahul Gandhi possessed exceptional qualities as the prime ministerial candidate. He dismissed the fact that he was a weak leader and said that it was unto historians to analyze that. He said the rise in prices was the main reason why Congress lost in Delhi. He also added that he enjoyed the 10 years as the Prime Minister.
There was no debate in the Andhra Pradesh assembly on the bill for the formation of a Telangana state and the assembly was adjourned when legislators from Seemandhra did not allow the house to hold its proceedings. The speaker had to adjourn the house two times and then it was adjourned for the day. The Seemandhara legislators were pressing for the demand for a new state. The winter session of the Assembly had started after 15 days to discuss the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2013 which had been sent by the President. It has to be noted here that earlier the Speaker had adjourned the house on December 19 till January 3. The house will be meeting till January 10, and from January 16 to January 23 to discuss the bill. The president has directed the Assembly that the bill be sent by January 23 along with its views.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his press conference today accepted his government’s inability to check inflation which stayed high. He also admitted they failed to create adequate jobs in the manufacturing sector. He stated that much support was needed in small and medium enterprises which can generate ample employment opportunities. He also pressed for the need to increase supplies to keep a check on food inflation. He specified that though the government has taken required measures to protect the common man from the harsh effects of the rising prices. He also added that real wages in rural areas have grown at a rapid pace than before and per-capita consumption in both rural and urban areas has also increased remarkably.
Kolkata Marathon which will happen on Sunday will find more than 10,000 participants that also includes a wheelchair bound person, two women over 80 year as well as children with cerebral palsy. The event which has a prize money of Rs.11.1 lakh is being organized to mobilize funds for treatment of underprivileged child who have cancer. Cyclists, stars, musician and players all will be participating in the event. There would be likes of former cricketer Sourav Ganguly, footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, actors Rituparna Sengupta and designer Anamika Khanna among others. The participation will be from different states like Punjab, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha. The race is organized by the Tata Medical Centre. There are five categories in the race-marathon, mini marathon, corporate run, fun run and school run.
Science and Technology
On January 4 the countdown for the launch of GSLV or geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle, which is the heavy-duty rocket and would have on board communication satellite GSAT-14, will kick start. The countdown which is of 29 hours will start at 11.20am on Saturday and the rocket will be blasting off probably at 4.18pm on Sunday from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The rocket was brought to the launch pad on December 28, 2013 and had got the clearance for the rocket launch for January 5. The focus is there on Isro’s successful launch of GSLV as it will be through the indigenous cryogenic engine. This was to be launched in August but could not be done as the fuel started leaking.
