Narendra Modi, the CM of Gujarat has come up with a scathing attack on Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President. He stated that in the upcoming elections BJP will win in a resounding manner. While talking to the media he criticized Gandhi for drawing a comparison between the development of other states and Gujarat. He also stated that she was making false claims regarding the availability of cooking gas in Gujarat. Modi stated that the government had provided piped cooking gas facilities to 7 lakh families across 300 villages. He also stated that the government wanted to provide the facility to 20 lakh more families.
He expressed confidence in the fact that people in Gujarat will be re-electing BJP in a major way after it was announced that the state assembly elections will be held in December. Modi further stated that he was not bothered by Gandhi’s election campaign in the state pointing out that Congress fared badly in the previous elections at Chota Udaipur where the Congress President had spoken to the voters. He has also indirectly criticized Gandhi for going outside India for her treatment and not apologized as per Congress demands for commenting on the costs involved in her treatment.

The Union Cabinet has approved legislative alterations whereby 49% FDI will now be allowed in the pension and the insurance sector. In the insurance sector the previous limit was 26%. Manmohan Singh presided over the cabinet meeting where the decisions were taken. He also consented to major changes to the Companies Act and provided the controlling body of the financial markets more independence in coming up with more options and commodities as far as futures trading was concerned.
The reigning coalition UPA has provided its approval to 21 proposals on Thursday even as it tries to liberate the economy even further. P Chidambaram announced the decisions – this included choosing 5 domestic airports for carrying out international operations, restructuring the employment exchanges, and permitting the Competition Commission to monitor the financial services. It has also cleared the draft version of the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17), which aims for an 8.2% growth of the national economy. The National Development Fund will now take it up. An infrastructure fund has also been cleared.
It is expected that the opposition, specially the BJP will create some opposition against the decisions on insurance, commodities forwards contracts, and pension when it comes to approval of the parliament. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is led by Yashwant Sinha, a prominent BJP leader. It had advised that FDI in insurance be limited to 26% and agreed to the idea of 26% FDI in the pension sector. Chidambaram has said that as the foreign equity in the two sectors is connected so the limits in pension and insurance are similar. As per the new pension plan the regulatory body has employed 7 fund managers for procuring investments.
