Taking forward the bilateral co-operation, India will begin supply of electricity to Bangladesh from October 5. The two countries have now a new transmission line through which the supply between the countries will begin. This would be the first time high voltage direct current transmission between two countries will begin. Last year a purchase pact between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) was inked. With this India’s eastern grid and Bangladesh’s western grid would be linked. The testing for this was in the process since September and now the transmission will begin from tomorrow October 5. Asian Development Bank has stated the supply will scale up to 250 MW in November and another 250 MW will be included in December 2013. The aim is to make it a 1000 MW transmission. This would ensure that Bangladesh can buy power from India at affordable rates than purchasing it from rental plants in that country.
