Nine in Thane case get 14 days police custody, 37 in hospital

All nine men associated with the Thane building were arrested for the collapse that killed 74 people were sent to 14 days police custody, whereas 37 of the injured remained in hospitals.Thane Police Commissioner K.P. Raghuvanshi said the Anti-Corruption Bureau was also doing investigation of Maharashtra's worst-ever building crash as public servants were also involved. Thane Municipal Corporation's suspended deputy municipal commissioner Deepak Chavan, assistant municipal commissioner Babasaheb Andhale, corporation clerk Kiran Madke, Nationalist Congress Party corporator Hira Patil, policeman Sayyed and estate agent Jabbar Patel who worked for Chavan were arrested. A former assistant municipal commissioner was also arrested on Sunday. Jamil Qureshi and Salim Shaikh was arrested from Uttar Pradesh and Thane on Saturday. NCP state president Madhukarrao Pichad also informed the suspension of corporator Hira Patil. At Chavan's house police recovered Rs.5 lakh in cash and some incriminating documents. All those who have been arrested have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

People will get Congress-free India in 2014: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said BJP will set the agenda for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, win and give the people "Congress-free India". Modi said he was confident about Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) victory in the next Lok Sabha polls, but remained silent over his own candidature for the prime minister's post. Modi also said that dynastic politics hampers any democracy. He further added that it did not imply any two people from the same family should not be in politics,but at present the country is trapped in dynastic rule. He spoke about this at a book release function at Gandhinagar April 4 which were seen as a clear implication of his prime ministerial ambitions.Modi also stated that people told him he had repaid his debt to Gujarat and now he has to pay his debt to the country.

Economy growth to be little over 6 per cent in 2013-14: Chidambaram

The Indian economy have growth of a little over 6 per cent in fiscal year 2013-14 as stated by the Finance Minister P Chidambaram. This came after expression of confidence by both Raghuram Rajan. chief economic advisor to the Finance Ministry, and Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the planning commission, that India's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by over 6 per cent during the current fiscal year.As per the government estimate, the country's economy will grow by 5 per cent in fiscal year 2012-13, that is the lowest in a decade. Economic momentum has slumped sharply at a time of weak external demand and limited scope for monetary or fiscal stimulus. The government reached its tax target of Rs. 10,38,003 crore for the fiscal year 2012-13 and direct taxes contributed Rs. 5 lakh crore, while indirect tax collections Rs. 4 lakh crore. Chidambaram also said that given the fact it was a difficult year, a revenue growth of 16.7 per cent was impressive, especially when the economy grew at 5 per cent.

'Chashme Baddoor' earns Rs.11.45 million in two days

David Dhawan's "Chashme Baddoor", which is a remake of 1981 film of the same name, has got positive reviews from the critics, and has also managed to gross Rs.11.45 crore in the first two days of its release. The movie has been made at a budget of Rs.17 crore and is produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. What clicked in the movie is that the director revamped the script and set the story of "Chashme Baddoor" in Goa focusing on the young generation and their life style.The film earned Rs.5.18 crore on Friday and Rs.6.27 crore on Saturday, making the total to Rs.11.45 crore.The original movie was produced by Gul Anand and directed by Sai Paranjpye, was based around three students living in Delhi - Siddharth (Farooque Sheikh), Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jai (Ravi Baswani) - and how their life changes when they meet Neha (Deepti Naval).Dhawan's "Chashme Baddoor" has Ali Zafar, Taapsee Pannu, Siddharth, Divyendu Sharma, Rishi Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Lilette Dubey in cast.The Sai Parnajpye-directed "Chashme Buddoor" was restored and also released with the new "Chashme Baddoor" on Friday.

India do a clean sweep at Davis Cup

Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri unleashed a power attack to post a 5-0 win for India against Indonesia in the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group 1 relegation playoff at Bangalore on Sunday.Devvarman,ranked 208, defeated David Agung Susanto 6-3, 6-1, while 20-year-old Bhambri followed it up with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Wisnu Adi Nugroho to set path ahead for Shiv Prakash Misra to sign off as team captain in a happy frame of mind.The two reverse singles, that followed were only of academic interest after India etched an unbeatable 3-0 lead on Saturday after the doubles victory.

India successfully tests nuclear-capable Agni-II missile

India test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-II strategic ballistic missile from a military base in Odisha,at Wheeler's Island in Bhadrak district at about 10.20 a.m. by army personnel as part of routine user-trials. This was informed by M.V.K.V. Prasad, director of the Integrated Test Range. He said the missile successfully hit the target.The medium-range missile with a range of over 2,000 km has already been included into the army, and is now component of the Strategic Forces arsenal for nuclear deterrence and is a part of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.The two-stage surface-to-surface missile, packed with an advanced high-accuracy navigation system and maneuvered by a novel state-of-the-art command and control system has a solid rocket propellant system.
