Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the citizens in the first ever Obama-styled Townhall meeting to commemorate 2 years of MyGovIndia Portal’s launch. PM Modi launched the PMO App. During the programme at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, PM Modi insisted on importance of "participative democracy" and highlighted Swacch Bharat Abhiyan as one of the greatest examples of people’s participation. He expressed his disgust on the inhuman works done by some rowdies in the name of cow vigilantism. While he emphasised on the importance of effective grievance redressal system for strengthening democracy, PM Modi highlighted Indian economy’s potential by saying that it is growing at 7.6 per cent despite world’s purchasing capacity remaining low. He also highlighted the importance of initiatives such as Smart City+ Mission - 300 Rurban villages and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana.
Senior BJP leader Vijay Rupani, a known confidante of BJP National President Amit Shah in Gujarat, took oath as Gujarat’s 16th Chief Minister at Gandhinagar’s Mahatma Mandir conference hall today. Nitin Patel, another hopeful for the CM’s post, was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor O.P. Kohli. PM Modi and BJP President Amit Shah congratulated the new CM and Deputy CM. BJP veteran L.K. Advani, Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar, and Anandiben Patel (outgoing Gujarat CM) were present during the ceremony.
Kuwaiti authorities arrested one of their nationals, 32 year old Abdullah Hadi Abdul Rahman Al-Enezi, for allegedly financing an Indian national named Areeb Majeed who is chargesheeted for having alleged association with ISIS in Iraq. The arrest was made after a tip-off from India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the consequent information is passed on to the NIA under Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty existing between India and Kuwait. Abdullah reportedly “admitted” of sending US$ 1000 to Majeed.

With China making the first successful trial run of world’s first Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) or "straddling bus" on August 3 in north China’s Qinhuangdao, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked road transport ministry to get maximum details on the project and explore possibilities to implement the same on highly congested Indian roads. The electricity driven TEB is environment friendly and can carry 300 to 1200 passengers. 22-metre-long TEBs are similar to light-rail train running over two lanes and cars could move beneath them.
Indian athletes started its campaign in Rio Olympics 2016 disappointingly as 9 first-round exits took place on Day 1. Both men’s and women’s Tennis doubles partners Paes-Bopanna and Sania-Prarthana lost in the very first round. The entire table tennis contingent lost too. However, the spirit of Indian athletes was lifted by the Indian men’s hockey team’s win over Ireland. Indian rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal also brought some cheers as he entered quarter-finals of the men’s single scull event.
A two-storey building in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi collapsed today early morning, killing an elderly couple (60 year old Sajjanlal Mahadev Gupta and his wife 55 year old Satyawati Sajjan Gupta) and injuring six others. Reports say, the collapsed building in Hanuman Tekadi locality on Khadan Road was declared by municipal authorities as “most dangerous” building. PTI reports say 7 to 8 more people are feared to be still buried under the debris.
