The month long violence in Assam which has led to loss of 77 lives and displacement of lakhs of people from their homes caused uproar in both the houses of the Parliament. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde condemned the incident and said that army has been put in alert to tackle the situation and the Center was closely monitoring the situation there. The Opposition slammed the government in its inability to check infiltration from Bangladesh and termed it as a failure on a matter of national security.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed 251 cases of disproportionate assets (DA) in the last three years (2009-2012), this information was provided to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, August 9. Out of this 120 cases and 81 cases are still under investigation. 84 cases were registered in 2009, 66 cases came up in 2010. 62 cases were filed in 2011 while till July 31, 2012, 39 cases were filed. CBI confiscated properties in 13 cases.
The West Bengal government is looking into the possibility of setting up a gas-based power plant in Durgapur. The government is considering the scope of coal bed methane (CBM) production in the Durgapur-Asansol region, but it all would depend on gas pricing.The size of the plant is yet undecided but it would be anywhere between 100 MW-300 MW. Private-Public Partnership model may be considered in this project. On the other hand Essar Energy informed that the principal secretary Malay Dey had a meeting with the company over terms of setting up a 200 MW plant.
Kingfisher Airlines passengers were stranded on Wednesday, August 8 as flights from Delhi and Mumbai were cancelled. This was due to a strike by pilots over non-payment of salaries. As many as two dozen flights were cancelled. As per the airline source, the company was monitoring the situation closely and a meeting with the representatives of the protesting employees will be held to resolve the issues. Company's board is also scheduled to meet to review the airline's performance on Friday.
M.C. Mary Kom got the lone medal in boxing for the country at the Olympics. She also scripted history by being India's first woman boxer to win an Olympic medal when she finished her campaign with bronze after losing the semi final match 6-11 to Britain's Nicola Adams. In men's 49 kg category Laishram Devendro Singh lost in the quarterfinal bout 18-23 to Ireland's Paddy Barnes which ended India's medal hopes in the boxing event.Mary Kom became only the second Indian boxer after Vijender Singh to win an Olympic medal. There was good news for India in track and field. Middle-distance runner Tintu Luka reached the semifinal of the women's 800 metres finishing third in the second heat by clocking 2:01.75 seconds. Though her personal best is 1:59.17 seconds achieved two years ago. She is coached by the legendary P.T. Usha
Filmmaker Kabir Khan said the content and direction of "Ek Tha Tiger" will sustain it, though initially Salman's presence will bring the footfall. He expected that the film will reach more that only the opening response. The movie is slated to release on August 15 in which Salman plays a spy. Katrina Kaif is featured here as his lady love adding more excitement regarding the movie. First look of the film has been well accepted and the multiplexes have already increased ticket prices by 10-15 percent.
Science and Technology
Google has extended its online search to Web-based email service Gmail. Messages stored can be included in the online searches. With this users will be able to find relevant Gmail messages and shared links in the search results. This would facilitate users to search for the contacts with whom they recently exchanged mails and also get updated status of flights. At present the feature is limited to google.com domain and the company is inviting people to sign up and use the feature.
