Political parties in India run on donations, sources unknown

Donations comprise a major part of the funds through which political parties sustain in India, but the names are not disclosed by the parties, this was revealed by the think-tanks Association for Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch. As per the data collected by the think-tanks, Congress is the richest party followed by BJP. Since 2004-05 and 2010-11, Congress's earning was Rs.2,008 crore and BJP’s Rs.994 crore. This income has grown over the years. Congress in 2004-05 earned Rs. 22,207 lakh when it won the elections. In 2005-06, its income was Rs.16,936 lakh, and went up to Rs.22,081 lakh in 2007-08, Rs.46,757.87 lakh in 2009-10, and Rs.30,708.87 lakh in 2010-11. BJP's earning in 2004-05 was Rs.10,412 lakh and in 2010-11, it had risen to Rs.16,800.92 lakh. Next parties on the list are the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with income of Rs.484 crore, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Rs.417 crore and the Samajwadi Party Rs.279 crore. No standard format is followed in declaring the income by the parties. Congress splits its income under three heads, sale of coupons (74 percent), donations (14 percent) and interest (12 percent) for its income from 2009-11. BJP stated from 2009-11, it earned through voluntary contribution (81 percent), interest (7.5 percent) and Aajiwan Sahyog Nidhi (11.5 percent). National coordinator for the think-tanks, Anil Bariwal stated the political parties have spelled names of very few contributors whereas it is necessary for the political parties to declare donations above Rs.20, 000.

Bus with more than 30 people onboard falls into Himachal gorge

A state roadways bus with more than 30 passengers fell into a 500-foot-deep gorge on Monday evening in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district. The bus which can carry 42 passengers was overcrowded. It was on its way to Ashapuri known for the hilltop shrine from Palampur. Joint rescue operations by police and the army have started but there was no information about casualties. Similar incident happened on August 11 when an overcrowded private bus fell into a 300-feet deep gorge in Chamba district killing fifty two people.

Mining operations in Goa temporarily suspended

The Goa government on Monday temporarily suspended mining operations of all the working mines in the state. Along with this pending verification of documents relating to mining activity and environmental clearances were also put on hold. It has been further stated that this will not affect thetrade and transportation of ore that has already been mined and are there in the lease hold area, in transit or stored or stocked on jetties. This comesfew days after Justice M.B. Shahled enquiry commission uncovered an illegal mining scam to the tune of Rs.35,000 crore in Goa's around 90 operational mines. In fact this decision came just afew minutes after mining activists stated that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who has mines in his portfolio is involved in supporting the tainted mining industry in the state.Various state government agencies that is the mines and geology department, forest department, pollution control board as well as central government agencies which functioning under thesupervisionof the union ministry for mines and environment and forests have been indicted by the Shah Commission.

Ranbir Kapoor sings a promotional song for 'Barfi'

Ranbir Kapoor plays a deaf and mute person in "Barfi" but he will be singing a promotional song in the film. The song is named 'Fatafati' and is not part of the film. The song will be released online and on TV as per director Anurag Basu.The song was shot during the shooting of 'Barfi!' and the lyrics have some Bengali words. The film is slated for release this Friday, September 14.

Facebook to weed out fake profiles

Facebook is looking for ways to do away with fake users and may be putting a scanner on those profiles which use generic names or have cartoon characters and celebrity images as profile pictures. Facebook said the fake profiles were being created to increase the likes. Facebook in its attempt to weed out these profiles may get in touch with the users to identify themselves if they doubt the genuineness of the accounts. If the users have very less friends, that may work against them.
