Sales figure of cars in India improved quite significantly during August 2014, compared to the same period last year. While August 2013 sales was 1,33,513 units, the figure increased by 15.16 per cent to reach 1,53,758 units during August 2014. As per Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Motorcycle sale also grew by 14.45 per cent during the same period. Its sales figure increased from 7,95,411 units to 9,10,312 units.

Apple will release its well-awaited flagship iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on October 16, 2014, with the price ranging from Rs 62,500 to Rs 80,500. It is going to be a treat for the Indians as the release will be done just one week before Diwali. Aircel and Bharati Airtel are listed by Apple as the sellers of these new flagship models. While the 16 GB model of iPhone 6 will be priced at Rs 53,500, the 64 GB and 128 GB models will be priced at Rs 62,500 and Rs 71,500, respectively.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders led by Arvind Kejriwal met Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Najeeb Jung of Delhi and asked him to withdraw his letter sent to the President of India in which the L-G had sought permission to invite BJP for forming the government in Delhi. AAP leader Manish Sisodia said that even if BJP succeeds in horse-trading of MLAs, it will not be able to solve the people's problems.
The Met department has warned the Gujarat administration that there may be flood situation in the state as heavy downpour continues to lash Saurashtra, Northern Gujarat, and Central Gujarat. The administration has evacuated around 5000 people on the banks of river Vishwamitri. While the danger level of water is up to 26 feet, the water level flowing now in Vadodara is 34 feet.
The Health Ministry had set up an expert panel on control of tobacco. This expert panel has suggested that a person smoking in public can be fined up to Rs 20,000. Suggestions are also given on increasing fine amount from Rs 5k to Rs 50k for all manufacturers if they do not carry pictorial warning signs on the packets.
The Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force are performing a Herculean task in Jammu and Kashmir flood-hit areas. Till now, they have rescued more than 90,000 civilians. But still lakhs are yet to be rescued. The Indian Air Force too has also been deployed in flood relief operations.
The Supreme Court, hearing the case filed by the association of bar owners in Kerala, has asked the state government not to cancel bar licenses till the hearing is over. The Kerala government recently decided to convert the state to a dry one within a span of ten years. To this end, they decided to cancel all bar licenses by September 12, 2014. Kerala CM Oommen Chandy said that 5-Star hotels will be permitted to serve liquor but they too have to remain dry on Sundays.
K Chandrashekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana, has issued a threat to the media 'to bury it 10 feet under the ground if it dares to insult Telangana Assembly.' The furore started when two television channels portrayed members of Assembly in not-so-positive light. The CM also threatened 'to break the neck and teach them a lesson'.
Trinamool Congress MP from Rajya Sabha Srinjoy Bose has been summoned by the central investigative agency, as part of its probe into the Saradha Scam. The TMC is facing a tough time because most of the persons called by CBI, related to this chit fund scam belong to the ruling party of West Bengal. Yesterday, the state's former Director General of Police and TMC leader Rajat Majumder was arrested due to close links with Sudipto Sen, Saradha Group CMD.
Union Trade Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has categorically said that despite decrease in Current Account Deficit (CAD), the government has not considered lowering gold import duty immediately. The government had increased import duty on gold by a whopping 10 per cent for containing CAD by limiting overseas purchases.
The Supreme Court has reserved its order on coal block allocations on the day when industry bodies and government seem to be divided on the issue. The Government at the last moment changed its earlier plea and didn’t press the apex court in favoring some coal blocks. However, industry bodies asked for formation of a committee that will select and exempt the selected coal blocks.
The Union Sports ministry has cleared names of 679 sportspersons to participate in the Asian Games 2014. This year the tournament will take place in South Korea. The decision has been taken after discussions between Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This large contingent of players will include 516 athletes, 163 coaches, and other support staff members. Asian Games 2014 will start on September 19 and will continue till October 4.
