The sources in Ministry of Defence say that the ministry has zeroed down two consortia - Bharat Electronics Ltd. and Larsen & Toubro – from a list of 12 companies, who submitted their bids in November 2013, for manufacturing Battlefield Management System, at the worth of Rs. 40,000-50,000 crore. The mechanism will enable soldiers in the battlefield to get equipped with a common battle picture, enabled by synchronisation of battlefield sensors with them through digital wireless network. While BEL’s stock price has increased by 4 per cent, L&T price has jumped by 2.06 per cent at 12.40pm IST.
The United Bank of India has reported a net profit to the tune of Rs. 42 crore during the third quarter of 2014-15, ending on December 31, 2014. The available data shows that during Q3 of 2013-14, UBI incurred a net loss to the tune of Rs. 1,238.08 crore. However, the public undertaking bank’s NPA or Non Performing Asset has swelled to Rs. 5,240 crore during the third quarter of current fiscal. Managing Director and CEO of UBI has said that they have restructured the debt to the tune of Rs. 7,697 crore.
Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Food Minister, has said today that his ministry is mulling the idea of giving export incentives on raw sugar to the tune of 1.4 million tonnes. The government is believed to be working on this idea as sugar mills in India have started to make distress sale for paying cane farmers. Sources have revealed that the government is all set to increase the subsidy amount from last year’s Rs. 3,300 per tone to Rs. 4,000 per tonne as export incentive to make Indian sugar competitive in global market.
Swine Flu in Gujarat has become a serious concern for Union Government of India as death toll reached 98, per official reports. JP Nadda, Union Health Minister, has reviewed the swine flu condition in Gujarat. Since last month the total number of registered swine flu cases in the state has reached 951. Nadda met Nitin Patel, Health Minister of Gujarat, along with other officials of the state health ministry at Patel’s Gandhinagar office. JP Nadda told media that the state government has chalked out a detailed plan to tackle the crisis.
After the humiliating defeat of BJP in Delhi assembly election, winning just 3 seats out of 70 seats, the numero uno of the party met senior national BJP leaders - Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Venkaiah Naidu, and Arun Jaitley to discuss the probable reasons behind the debacle. Just after the defeat, GVL Narasimha Rao (spokesperson of BJP) said that Delhi verdict should not be thought as a referendum on NDA government at the centre. The national President of BJP, Amit Shah, skipped the meeting as he was busy with his son’s wedding in Ahmedabad.
Bihar’s constitutional crisis continued today as the Bihar Governor failed to respond to Janata Dal (United)’s demand of asking Nitish Kumar yesterday to form the government even after strength show of Nitish with 130 MLAs outside the governor’s residence. Today Nitish Kumar reached Delhi with 70 MLAs, with 60 MLAs having already reached the national capital a day before. Per available information, Nitish will lead a delegation of 12 MLAs to meet President Pranab Mukherjee today at 7pm to break deadlock of Bihar’s constitutional crisis.
After Uddhav Thackeray, Chief of Shiv Sena, hailing Aam Aadmi Party’s victory yesterday, an article published in the mouthpiece of Shiv Sena – Saamna – claimed that poll debacle of BJP is the defeat of Narendra Modi himself. Uddhav also called victorious Arvind Kejriwal yesterday after his emphatic win and congratulated him. He also showed an interest in attending the oath-taking ceremony of Arvind Kejriwal as CM in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, if invited. After this outburst, some sections of political fraternity have started discussing about the probable BJP-ally in Maharashtra if Shiv Sena quits the government.
With Narendra Modi’s China visit during May 2015 approaching, an article published by Chinese Daily, run by the Government of China, urged India to take pro-active approach in solving India-China border issue. Lan Jianxue, an expert on strategic affairs, has asked both the emerging giants to undertake flexible and innovative approach for reaching a settlement, especially on the contentious issue of Arunachal Pradesh. The article also said that both India and China have agreed that lingering border-dispute should not be left to be solved by the coming generations. Interestingly, it is published just before Ajit Doval (NSA of India) is scheduled to meet Yang Jiechi (Doval’s Chinese counterpart) in Manila.
The government of Rajasthan has entered into a multi-crore MoU with Adani Enterprises for developing the largest solar park of India. The 10,000 MW capacity project is planned to be build over the coming ten years. The estimated investment of the project is around Rs. 40,000 crore. Adani Enterprises is going to set up 5,000 MW solar power project over the coming five years. The company is also understood to be developing the power evacuation system and solar manufacturing units, per the signed pact. MoU was signed by Vneet S Jaain (CEO of Adani Power) and B K Doshi (MD of Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation).

The largest private bank of India, ICICI Bank, has announced the launch of the first digital banking facility in India called ‘Pockets’. With this e-wallet facility, the customers of the bank will be able to send money to any Facebook friend, mobile number, bank account, and email id instantly. Per ICICI Bank, this e-wallet facility can be accessed by those too who are not customers of the bank. Any person having Google Android smartphone can download the app from Google Play store and start transaction by creating user id and password.
Indian cricket team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is still undecided about the probable bowling combination for the upcoming India-Pakistan World Cup match to be played on February 14. When asked about the final line-up in the bowling department, Dhoni didn't give a definite answer to the question. Skipper just said that the bowling combination of the team will be decided after checking the wicket in Adelaide and assessing the prevailing conditions. It is learnt that MS Dhoni is in favour of playing five bowlers.

Facebook has entered into an agreement with Reliance Communications Ltd. for providing free internet service to the customers who use selected 30 online services/apps in India including ESPN Cricinfo, TimesJobs, OLX, Babajob, Cleartrip, and others. The service has initially been provided for Reliance Comm. customers in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Chennai, and Guajarat. The target customers of the new Internet.org app initiative are mainly rural and low income users. It is learnt that in order to increase social network access, Facebook has also partnered with over 150 wireless providers for affordable or free internet access.
