The Supreme Court’s landmark judgment which specifies that leaders who are convicted should remain out of power is cause for worry for Uttar Pradesh as almost half of its legislators face grave criminal charges.
Out of 403 legislators, 189 have pending criminal cases like robbery, murder, rape, kidnapping and extortion against them. 194 cases among the ones that are pending may mean a minimum of a two-year prison term. Out of the 189 legislators, 111 are from SP, BSP’s 29 and BJP’s 25 members while 13 from the Congress. There is one legislator who has 36 cases pending against him and shockingly 14 of those are murder charges. There is another who has 12 cases of murder among the 20 cases pending against him.
The stats are shocking in itself if the details of the cases are analyzed:
- 12 cases for incitement of communal violence,
- 21 for armed robbery,
- 4 rape cases,
- 9 cases of looting,
- 15 kidnapping and murder,
- 95 attempted murder cases
- 38 murder cases

The government will be shelling out Rs. 1,030 crore in the 12th Plan period (2012-17) for updating the country’s industrial infrastructure. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) which was chaired by PM Manmohan Singh on Thursday gave its nod for the “Modified Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme” which will mean an expenditure of Rs. 1,030 crore.
Out of this, Rs. 450 crore is earmarked for committed liability and Rs. 580 crore for handling 14 to 16 new projects. Among these projects, 10% of the expenditure of at least two projects will be in the northeast. All these projects will mean upgradation in the present or greenfield industrial congregation as was specified by the official announcement. Though the scheme encompasses all the states in India, but due to limit of expenditure only 14-16 states will have projects.
There is some interesting news for buyers of small cars, the price of which does not cross Rs. 6 lakhs. They now need to pay 25% of the cost and take the car home. Then they don’t have to pay the EMI for three years and that would be taken care of by a Pune-based advertising company who will pay on the buyer’s behalf. All the buyer has to do in return is to convert the car into a billboard, that is, to devote 40-60% of the body of the car for display ads.
These ads will be removed after 3 years. Also the person has to run his car for 1500 km in a month. The company thinks it will get good response from the people. The advertising firm targets 1 lakh cars under this scheme this year. But the point remains will this scheme attract users, that is will anyone want their car turned into a billboard.
Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and P Kashyap will not be playing in the VV Natu Memorial All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament which is scheduled from July 17 in Pune. The top shuttlers in India are now engaged in the preparation for World Championships to be held from August 5 in Guangzhou, China and they don’t want to risk any injury before that.
This makes Arundhati Pantawane fit for top billing. She is said to be in form. Sai Praneeth B may get top seeding in men’s category in the absence of Kashyap. Praneeth grabbed a straight game win against world number four Yun Hu of Hong Kong in the Singapore Super Series. Another player to look out for is K Srikanth. He notched single’s title in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold.
