Bill for amendment of RTI Act introduced in the Lok Sabha

 

A bill to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act was introduced in the Lok Sabha with a purpose to keep political parties out of the purview of the RTI Act. V Narayanasamy, the Minister of State for Personnel and Training introduced the bill. On 3rd June, the Central Information Commission (CIC) had specified that six national political parties to be brought under the RTI Act considering the fact that these parties were public authorities, and received substantial funds from the government. What is to be note here is that this bill will be easily passed as many parties are against the order by the CIC. The union cabinet had given its approval for the amendments on 2nd August. Kapil Sibal had stated that if the order of CIC was passed no political party would be able to operate properly.

Armed forces are free to respond in the way they find it suitable: Antony

 

Defence Minister A.K. Antony stated that the armed forces have the authority to suitably deal with the situation arising at the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. He said they have the freedom to respond in an appropriate manner. Meanwhile, firing continued in the night on the border in full violation of ceasefire agreement by the Pakistani troopers. The Deputy High Commissioner Gopal Baglay has been summoned by Pakistan’s Foreign Office to express its concern for ceasefire agreement violation by Border Security Force. Whereas, India has said that thrice the ceasefire agreement has been violated by the Pakistani soldiers since Sunday.

SBI profit slumps by 13.6% in April-June quarter

 

State Bank of India which is India’s biggest lender has announced that it has seen a 13.6% slump in its net profit. It was Rs. 3,241.08 crore for the quarter which ended on June 30. The decline was because of increased operational cost and slow growth in interest income. Last year in the same period the bank had registered Rs. 3,751.56 crore profit. At the same time the total income has increased and is now Rs. 36,192.62 crore as against Rs. 32,415.49 crore in the like period of 2012-13. This had a telltale effect on the market as the bank’s share price dipped by 2.68% to Rs 1,617 at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The non-performing assets of the SBI spiked to 5.56% compared to 4.99% in the similar period.

Sardar Singh to lead India in Asia Cup Hockey Tournament

 

Sardar Singh will lead India in the crucial Asia Cup Hockey Tournament, slated to be held from 24th August to 1st September in Ipoh, Malaysia. The Indian team will start their trip on 16th August. Players like Gurwinder Singh Chandi, S V Sunil, Danish Mujtaba and Akashdeep Singh will not be playing in the team. The fresh faces who will be playing as forwards are Nikin Thimmaiah and Ramandeep Singh. They are in addition to Nithin Thimmaiah, Malak Singh and Mandeep Singh. The mid-fielder S K Uthappa and Amit Rohidas who is the defender are there in the team and goalkeeper P R Sreejesh will be the vice-captain. India is in the Pool B which has teams like Bangladesh, Korea, Oman while Malaysia, Pakistan, Chinese-Taipei and Japan are in Pool A. India will meet Oman on 24th August for their first match.

Kabir Khan's next movie to be on counter terrorism

 

Director Kabir Khan is all set to make a movie on counter-terrorism after the Mumbai attacks. His last movie "Ek Tha Tiger" dealt with a RAW agent’s life. Hussain Zaidi will be writing the script who had earlier exhaustively researched for movie like "Black Friday" and "Shootout At Wadala". Saif had earlier featured “Kurbaan” which was based on global terrorism though he played a terrorist in that movie but now he will be counter-terrorist in Kabir’s next. Sajid Nadiadwala is the producer of the movie who has up till now made entertaining movies. It is also being said that Saif needs to do a lot of research to get into the skin of the character.
