BJP narrowed its gap with Congress’s Rajya Sabha numbers as it won 11 out of the 27 contested RS seats across 7 states. In the remaining 8 states, 30 candidates won unopposed. BJP-backed independent candidate, media mogul Subhash Chandra, won from Haryana after 14 votes of Congress MLAs were declared invalid. Other prominent winners include Congress’s Kapil Sibal, Oscar Fernandes, and Jairam Ramesh; BJP’s M J Akbar, M Venkaiah Naidu, Nirmala Sitharaman, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, and Birendra Singh; and SP’s Amar Singh. All 4 incumbent Union Ministers won. Though NDA now has 72 RS seats (far below 123 seat halfway mark), Congress remains the single largest party in the upper house with 58 seats.
To recover Rs. 950 crore loan default case of liquor baron and owner of now defunct Kingfisher Airlines Vijay Mallya, Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached his properties worth over Rs. 1411 crore. The move comes after a day ED moved to Mumbai court for declaring the business tycoon a proclaimed offender. Properties attached include Coorg’s 27 acre coffee plantation, Bangalore’s UB Towers, and others in Chennai and Mumbai. Banks are now trying to recover around Rs. 9000 crore loaned to Mallya for his collapsed venture Kingfisher Airlines.
AITA (All India Tennis Association) asked Bopanna to pair up with Leander Paes (who recently won a Career Slam in Mixed Doubles, taking his total title wins to 22 including 10 mixed doubles wins) in the men’s doubles event at the Rio Olympics. Though Bopanna’s choice of partner was Saketh Myneni, he told media that he respects decision of AITA. Leander Paes will now represent India in Olympics for 7th consecutive time and has regarded his selection as “dream come true moment”.
A Sanatan Sanstha activist Virendra Tawde (member of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and a ENT surgeon by profession), who allegedly killed firebrand rationalist and anti-superstition activist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, was picked up by CBI officers from Maharashtra’s Panvel (near Mumbai) on Friday night. He was produced before a special court yesterday in Shivajinagar. Tawde will be in CBI custody till June 16. Son of the late Dr. Dabholkar, Dr. Hamid Dabholkar, said deaths of Govind Pansare and Kannada scholar M. M. Kalburgi could have been avoided if CBI took action just after his father’s death. He also said that thorough 2009 Madgaon blast by NIA and consequent arrests could have averted his father’s death.
Special Cell of Delhi Police told a court that Indians who joined Al Qaeda were moved by demolition of Babri Mosque as well as 2002 Godhra riots. These incidents made some Indian youths vow to establish terror group AQIS’s (Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent) base in India. In the chargesheet filed against 17 accused, Delhi police has charged Syed Anzar Shah, Mohd. Abdul Rehman, Zafar Masood, Abdul Sami, and Mohd. Asif under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). 12 out of 17 charge-sheeted are still absconding.
Results of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2016 examination has been declared today. While Jaipur’s Aman Bansal (Rajasthan) topped the exam, the second and third spots were held by Yamunanagar’s Bhavesh Kumar (Haryana) and Jaipur's Kunal Goyal (Rajasthan) respectively. Interestingly, all the 3 toppers were the students of coaching institutes in Kota. Around 1,98,000 students appeared for the examination, organised by IIT Guwahati along with Joint Admission Board 2016, out of which 36,566 candidates cleared it.
