Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity Express got derailed between Anekal Road and Hosur, bordering area between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, at 7.35 am. Over 100 passengers were injured and nine were dead, as per the reports. According to the Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu,the train derailed because of sudden hitting of bolder lying on the track. The minister has reportedly ordered formation of an inquiry committee to fix the problem so that such accidents don’t happen again. Officials have rushed to the accident site.
Arvind Kejriwal, CM-designate of Delhi, is believed to be all set to appoint Sanjiv Chaturvedi, a renowned whistleblower who was removed from the position of vigilance chief after exposing corruption in state-run AIIMS as anti-corruption chief of Delhi. Indian Forest Service officer, Sanjiv Chaturvedi, got support from Aam Aadmi Party earlier during his removal from his position. AAP earlier claimed that the IFS officer was victimized by the then Health Ministry for exposing corruption at AIIMS hospital.
SC has barred Gujarat Police from taking any action against Teesta Setalvad, who along with her husband were accused of embezzling funds raised for Gulbarg Society museum in memory of more than 60 people killed during 2002 Gujarat Riots. Setalvad has always denied the allegations of misappropriating Rs. 1.5 crore funds. Gujarat police reached Setalvad’s Mumbai residence just after Gujarat HC rejected her anticipatory bail application by saying that the latter is not cooperating with the probe. While representing Teesta, lawyer Kapil Sibal told SC that Gujarat government is using all means to arrest the activist. Setalvad got relief till February 19.
Bharatiya Janata Party workers and supporters got a reason to smile again after humiliating poll drubbing in Delhi Assembly election as the party got a huge mandate in Assam municipal polls. Sarbananda Sonowal of Bharatiya Janata Party told media that he welcomes people’s verdict and thanks them for reposing faith in the party. He went on to add that his party will do every possible bit to address the concerns of the people. Out of 74 municipal and town committees, BJP won 43 seats.
Congress MP and husband of Late Sunanda Pushkar, Shashi Tharoor, has been grilled by Special Investigation Team of Delhi Police on alleged murder of his wife. Sources revealed that Shashi faced a volley of tough questions from the SIT team, especially, on IPL controversy. The interrogation took place yesterday in Anti-Auto Theft Squad's South Delhi office. Tharoor may be grilled for fourth time this weekend. Interrogation took place on a day when viscera sample of Sunanda Pushkar was sent to FBI laboratory of USA.
Union Government has decided to redraw India’s green laws after T S R Subramanian committee submitted a report by reviewing six environmental laws. Government has now decided to invite expert consultants who will help in providing a balanced and concrete environment law that will subsume existing legislation. Environment Ministry has also released a “Request for Proposal” document for preparing as well as presenting draft legislation on Umbrella Environment Law. According to the document, the consultants are also expected to help government in preparation as well as presentation of draft legislation on building national institute on environment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took to Twitter to convey his best wishes to Indian cricket team for the upcoming Cricket World Cup, scheduled to start with a India-Pakistan match tomorrow. Modi made a series of tweets to wish each player of the Indian squad. Modi also addressed Ravindrasinh Jadeja as ‘Sir Jadeja’ and said that he is a fan of his style of playing.
Flipkart is all set to double its GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) by end of December 2015. According to the company sources, the eCommerce giant is looking forward to increase its GMV on products sold to around Rs. 50,000 crore or $8 billion. Sources also revealed that this decision of doubling GMV from current $4 billion was taken by the board of directors in a meeting that took place in Singapore. It has been learnt that Flipkart has decided to increase units of shipping from current 8 million units to 1 billion units per month.
Mumbai’s largest taxi operator, TABcab, has initiated discussion with private equity investors to raise over Rs 600 crore or $100 million through dilution of a minor stake. Sources indicate that the raised fund will be used by the taxi operator to expand its base in Chennai and Delhi. According to reports, TABcab is in the initial stage of discussion in acquiring a leading Chennai-based Taxi operator. Though the other operators in the business have raise funds through private equity route, this is the first time TABcab is raising fund through this route.
Indian bourses today opened with renewed enthusiasm after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made it clear that BJP’s humiliating defeat during Delhi Assembly election had nothing to do with the continuation of the reform agenda. BSE Sensex was trading at 28,929 points and NSE Nifty at 8,755 at around 9:30 am IST. Nifty’s trading above 8,750 points. At 11:15 am, CNX Nifty was trading at 8,742.15 and S&P BSE Sensex at 28,876.62. At CNX Nifty, the major gainers are Lupin (3.18 per cent), Ultracemco (3.12 per cent), SBIN (2.62 per cent), TCS (2.19 per cent), and Sun Pharma (2.18 per cent).
Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister, told media that there is absolutely no relation with the continuation of economic reforms with the BJP’s electoral humiliation during Delhi Assembly election. He made this statement yesterday while addressing the fifth Indo-US Economic and Financial Partnership meeting. The press conference was attended by Jacob Lew, US treasury secretary. Jaitley also said that the reforms they are aiming at, are intended to improve the quality of life, alleviate poverty, generate jobs, and most importantly, bring investment to India. Finance Minister’s thumb’s up to reforms has cheered the market, as early market today witnessed 150 point jump in S&P BSE Sensex.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Telecommunications and IT Minister of India, has told the media that the Digital India initiative has a huge employment generating potential. While delivering a lecture in front of Shri Ram College of Commerce’s students, Prasad said that the IT industry provides employment to around three million people and it will provide employment to more than 50 million or five crore people after the implementation of Digital India initiative. He also said that out of Rs. 20,000 crore proposals, government has approved proposals worth Rs.6,000 crore under ‘Make in India’ initiative.
