Prime Minister Narendra Modi released first ever ‘Startup India’ action plan yesterday evening in Delhi and went on to say that the focus on “Make in India” includes “Make for India” too. The road map includes pledge of Rs 10,000 crore fund for start-ups, easier exit policy for start-ups (included in to-be introduced Bankruptcy Bill, 2015), easier patent registration process, setting up of single-point start-up information source (Startup Hub), simpler patent registration, easier procurement policy of government, and others.
While interacting with students of NMIMS, Congress VP Rahul Gandhi said that the stuck GST Bill will get passed in the parliament in just 15 minutes if Narendra Modi government accepts certain conditions. Rahul said their first condition is cap on the tax rate, followed by withdrawal of additional 1 per cent tax proposed on inter-state goods movement for comforting manufacturing states. Congress’s third demand is setting up of a dispute resolution panel, headed by a SC judge.
SoftBank Chairman and CEO Masayoshi reasserted his company’s investment pledge of $10 billion in India. During an interview he also said that SoftBank has already invested $2 billion in Indian companies, which he claims has surpassed his own pledge of $1 billion investment every year in India. While charting out his priorities, Masayoshi Son said that solar and internet sectors are his priorities. He also asked Indian government to resolve slow internet issues and develop robust infrastructure of mobile phone.

Director of Thiruvananthapuram’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), S Somanath, has said that human flight mission to space may not reap tangible benefits currently and instead vouched for sending robotic mission into space. He went on to say that a manned space mission will cost Rs. 40,000 crore but questioned justification of spending so much money by the country at present. A proposal of sending unmanned robotic mission to space has been sent to the Union Government for approval.
A Delhi High Court bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath has asked sports department under Union Government to decide whether there is a need of incorporating arbitration clause in national sports federation’s rules and regulation so that appeal can be filed to Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) against the decisions of international sports bodies such as AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association). The concerned petition was filed challenging suspension of boxer Laisram Sarita Devi in October 2014 by AIBA.
After snowballing public discontent against police inaction in hit-and-run case of Air Force Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud during republic day practice drill on January 13, main accused Sambia Sohrab (son of TMC leader and erstwhile RJD MLA from Burrabazaar Mohammed Sohrab) was arrested yesterday from Kolkata’s Park Circus 7-point crossing at around 11.15 pm. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Debasish Boral said they traced Sambia’s mobile phone location at 8.30pm IST in central Kolkata and finally nabbed him from Park Circus.
