Government thinking of closing down chit fund companies

In the event of the recent chit fund scam by the Saradha group and numerous instances of chit funds emerging without any restriction on them, the Parliamentary Standing Committee is contemplating closing down all the chit fund companies in the country.

Yashwant Sinha is leading this government panel which will also get into discussion with the RBI governor D. Subbarao. It was also universally accepted that there was failure in the government machinery to curtail the proliferation of these companies. In fact, there is no clarity regarding the number of chit fund operators in the country.

The parliamentary panel earlier had a meeting with the Finance Secretary R. S. Gujral and Revenue Secretary Sumit Bose and it emerged that they did not have a meeting among themselves which made the probe all the more tough and so conclusive steps could not be taken against chit fund companies. The need to revamp the entire system was felt as well.
