A day after a woman gymnast accused international level gymnast Chandan Pathak and Asian Games coach Monoj Rana of making lewd remarks and obscene gestures against her during national camp in New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Gymnastic Federation of India promised of undertaking strict action against the duo if found guilty. The Sports Authority of India has already initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his hope that strategic and cooperative partnership between the two countries will reach higher plane by strengthening bilateral ties. 12 documents have been exchanged including economic and trade development plan, railways, audio visual co-production, drug administration, etc. Indian PM Narendra Modi raised his concerns regarding Indo-China border violation issues before the Chinese President. Xi assured of finding a solution. A group of Tibetans demonstrated against China’s Tibet policy outside New Delhi’s Hyderabad House. Interestingly, Dalai Lama referred Xi as more open minded and realistic.
Science and Technology
Unnecessary wastage of agricultural produce may end with few young IIT Engineers creating a cold storage that runs on solar power and the running cost is almost nil. This kind of product has not been developed anywhere else in the world. Vivek Pandey, a mechanical engineering student, along with his team developed this project at Science andTechnologyentrepreneurshipPark(STEP) of IIT-Kharagpur. This cost-effective project has been tested successfully in a farmland in Karnataka.
The Maharashtra unit of BJP has climbed down from its previous claim of 135 seats to 119 seats in upcoming Maharashtra Assembly election after set-back during by-poll election. After BJP’s climbdown, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut assured that the 25-year-old tie-up is strong and the CM candidate will be from their party. Uddhav Thackeray will contest from either Vile Parle or Mumbai Dadar. If he decides to contest from a second seat, it is expected to be Thane.
The US has officially said they will press India for signing the WTO deal when Indian PM Narendra Modi meets Obama at White House during September 29-30, 2014. In late July, India had blocked the WTO deal over the issue of food subsidies. Analysts believe this contentious issue may dampen the euphoric mood of Modi’s visit to the USA for revitalising strategic partnership.
India-China bonhomie started on the first day of Chinese President’s visit to India by signing deals between business delegates of both the countries, worth $3.4 billion. Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd and IndiGo of worth $2.6 billion. The low-cost Indian carrier plans to buy 30 aircraft with available finance from the largest commercial bank of China.
Quikr, renowned online classified platform, raised Rs 365 crore (equivalent to $60 billion) for expanding their mobile business and product development. Tiger Global Management led the latest round of funding. This fund-raising has increased valuation of Quikr to a mammoth Rs 1800 crore. The last fund raising initiative was led by Investment Kinnevik of Sweden during March 2014, which raised Rs 550 crore raising valuation to Rs 1,525 crore.
Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014 shows there are 100 filthy rich people in India whose collective net worth is $175 Billion. There are 2,325 uber-rich across the globe. Though India has retained its 6th position in the list of countries having most number of billionaires, in comparison to last year, the billionaire count decreased from 103 to 100 with a $5 billion slide in their collective net worth. Currently, it stands at $175 Billion.
Senior Supreme Court lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, today refused to divulge the identity of the whistleblower who gave Bhushan the guest list of CBI Chief’s residence as well as CBI documents related to 2G Scam. He reasoned that disclosing the identity will endanger life of the whistleblower. The apex court’s bench of justices comprising SA Bobde and HL Dattu had asked Bhushan on September 15, 2014 to reveal the source of information through sealed envelop.
The Civil Secretariat of Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar reopened today after it was shut down due to the devastating flood. Secretariat’s security in-charge said that by 9.30am, less than ten per cent of the employees came to office. Through flood water has started to recede in the capital of the state, many areas are still under water. The Secretariat’s ground floor is still not functional.
The Narendra Modi government has floated a Draft Cabinet note for revamping social security schemes. As per the draft, there are three specific proposals. First, it proposes to widen skill development scope. Second, it proposes to plug lacunae in mid-day meal scheme. Third, the state-sponsored pension and insurance schemes (Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana, and Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana) are proposed to be merged for reducing administrative cost.
The Supreme Court has expressed its unhappiness regarding Narendra Modi government’s proposed procedure for appointing Chief Vigilance and Vigilance Commissioners. The apex court has observed that the proposed procedure lacks transparency.
