After the Union government asked the national airliner to improve his financial position, Air India is all set to curtail its cost to the tune of Rs 14 billion or Rs 1,400 crore, equivalent to $227 million, accounting for 6 per cent of the total outlays. Management of the loss making state-owned airline has issued statement that they will discontinue unprofitable flights, stop contractual hiring, and identify surplus workers for bringing down variable cost to 1/10th of the current total of Rs 140 billion. Staff hospitality and travel restrictions are also introduced by the national airliner to curtail cost.
Wipro’s third quarter net profit surpassed market expectation, leading to massive spurt in its stock price. While market analysts expected the company to garner net profit of Rs 2,157 crore during Q3 of 2014-15 fiscal, the actual net profit during the quarter that ended on December 31 was Rs 2,192 crore. Revenue figure has also exceeded the expectation of Rs 11,830 crore, posting revenue figure of Rs 11,992 crore. Market reacted sharply and the stock opened at Rs 591.10 over the previous day close of Rs 555.05 at NSE. At 1.42 pm IST, Wipro was trading at Rs 589.85 and the high was Rs 598.50.
Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is all set to reopen 1400 petrol pumps according to a renewed plan of reaching maximum number of customers this year. Market analysts say that this new move is intended to replicate its 2006 success and consequently increase its market share in petrol to 7.2 per cent and in high speed diesel segment to 14.3 per cent.
BJP Party sources have revealed that Kiran Bedi is all set to become the Chief Ministerial candidate of the party during the upcoming Delhi Assembly election. Parliamentary board of BJP is expected to finalise the list of its candidates by today. It is also learnt that the ex-top cop will occupy the room now allotted to Dr Harsh Vardhan, former CM candidate of BJP. In the mean time, National President of BJP, Amit Shah, has shown confidence in winning the Delhi election. However, he also asked the BJP cadres not to be complacent.
Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has stirred up a hornet’s nest by asking electorates of Delhi Assembly to vote for only AAP but take money from the other major political players in the fray – Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress. By saying this ‘AK’ has hinted that BJP and INC are resorting to electoral malpractices by offering money to the voters in the national capital. Kejriwal made this statement while addressing an election rally at Uttam Nagar in Delhi. Congress and BJP both reacted sharply on Kejriwal’s recent controversial statement.
At a time when most of the media almost wrote off the Congress from the list of serious political contenders in the upcoming Delhi Assembly poll, the grand old party of India has upped its ante against Aam Aadmi Party by releasing a booklet that reveals the U-turns of AAP during its 49-day rule in 2013-14. The booklet is named “49 Dino Ki Ultee Chaal, Dilli Hui Behal, U-Turn Kejriwal”. While releasing the booklet, Ajay Maken (campaign chief of Delhi Congress) said that it contains 16 instances where AAP’s Kejriwal failed to keep his promise.
Unprecedented security arrangements have been done in the Indian capital in views of US President Barack Obama’s scheduled visit to India on Republic Day. After intelligence tip-off about possible infiltration by LeT terrorists along international border, security arrangements have been beefed up. Sources have revealed that ten additional companies of BSF personnel have been deployed along LoC. In an unprecedented development, the United States of America has warned Pakistan about serious ramifications if terrorist activities are reported along international border during the US President’s visit to India.
Sudipta Chatterjee, the creator and manager of fake Prime Minister’s Office website Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Yojna, was traced by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch and arrested from Kolkata. The 43-year old Sudipta was not only running the fake website but also allegedly operating a racket that promised government jobs to unsuspecting individuals in lieu of money. Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police (Crime), told media that the racketeers led by Chatterjee had their base in Howrah and were also operating a call centre having 17 callers.
R K Laxman, the legendary cartoonist and the famous creator of the iconic common man character, suffered from multi-organ failure and was promptly hospitalised to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. Dr Sameer Joe of the hospital told media that Laxman is still in a critical condition, and has been put under ventilator support. It is learnt that the 94-year old cartoonist was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, where he underwent dialysis after suffering from urinary infection. Though he was the creator of the common man cartoon, Laxman stopped making political cartoons in the recent past.

Toshiba, the tech giant from Japan, has introduced a series of smart LED televisions in India. In a release, Toshiba has said that with their full HD L5400, HD, and ultra HD 4K L9450 series, users will not only be able to watch customised content but also access internet through the in-built Wi-Fi connection and get to experience excellent graphics and visual details. L5400 HD and full HD television series are available in the price range from Rs 38,990 to Rs 1.29 lakh. Ultra HD 4K L9450 series is priced within Rs 1.99 lakh-Rs 10.49 lakh range.
Yuki Bhambri, the Indian qualifier to Australian Open, lost to Andy Murray, the two-time grand slam champion. The Indian contender was beaten by Murray today in straight sets - 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Though Bhambri lost the first two sets rather easily, he put up a brave fight in the third set and moved ahead of Murray by 4-1. However, the two-time grand slam champion made up the lost ground quickly and beat the Indian at Margaret Court Arena in the tie-breaker.
Sania Mirza has reached her career best rank yet again this season after securing a win in the doubles match against Bethanie Mattek-Sands by partnering with Su-Wei Hsieh at Sydney’s WTA Apia International. She reached the 5th rank by earning 470 points. Sania has reportedly said that she can improve upon her current best position if she manages to stay away from injuries. Today Sania-Su Wei duo will start their Australian Open tour by playing against Maria Irigoyen-Romina Oprandi duo.
