Saina regains World No.1 spot

Despite losing the World Championships final in Jakarta, ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal regained the top spot in women's singles in the latest rankings of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) released on 20 August 2015. The 25-year-old Saina rose a place to overtake her conqueror in the summit clash, Carolina Marin of Spain, to once again be ranked No.1. The reigning World Champion dropped to No.2 while Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying overtook reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China to be No.3. Source: IANS

Saina signs two-year deal with IOS

World No.1 shuttler Saina Nehwal has signed an exclusive management contract with leading management and marketing company IOS Sports and Entertainment for a period of two years. IOS is targeting around Rs.25 crore over two years, depending upon her performance in the 2016 Rio Olympics and her stability in the rankings. The announcement comes just after Saina won a silver medal at the World Championship in Jakarta on 16 August 2015. Source: IANS

SpiceJet offers discounted fares on 100,000-plus seats

To lure more passengers during the upcoming festive season, budget airline SpiceJet haslaunched a three-day-long discounted one-way fare scheme starting from Rs.799 to Rs.2,699 valid on more than 100,000 seats (excluding taxes). "We are known as the airline that has made air travel more affordable for more Indians than ever before, revolutionising the industry and driving record growth in passengers in the process," said Shilpa Bhatia, senior vice president and head of sales and distribution for SpiceJet. Karbonn launches new budget smartphone

Domestic handset-maker Karbonn has launched a new budget smartphone - the Aura 9 - at a price of Rs.6,999. The smartphone comes with a 5-inch big IPS-LCD screen, 4,000 mAh battery along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory expandable to 32GB. The device will have a eight-megapixel auto-focus rear camera and a five-megapixel front camera. Source: IANS

Two lakh people affected in Assam due to floods

About two lakh people have been affected in seven districts of Assam due to heavy rains. The Brahmaputra River is reported to be flowing above the danger level in Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts of the state. According to media reports, a total of about 280 villages have been affected by the floods. Reportedly 45 relief camps have been established across the state in the flooded districts and 18,000 people have already taken shelter in them.

ISRO to launch GSAT 6 on August 27

India will launch communication satellite GSat-6 on August 27, the space agency said.The satellite will be launched with the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) heavier rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV).According to ISRO, the GSLV rocket carrying the GSat-6 communication satellite weighing over 2,100 kg will blast off at 4.52 p.m. on August 27. ED, Crime Branch raid Kamat, kins' premises

Enforcement Directorate sleuths along with Crime Branch officials conducted a series of raids on several premises owned by former chief minister Digambar Kamat and his close relatives in connection with the Louis Berger bribery case. The raids began early Thursday morning at Kamat's residence in Margao, 35 kms from the state capital, his office premises in the city as well as the residential and business premises of his close relative in Panaji. India opt to bat against Sri Lanka in second Test

India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat against Sri Lanka in the second match of the three-Test series at the P Sara Oval in Colombo. Indians have made three changes to their side for the encounter, bringing in Murali Vijay, Stuart Binny and Umesh Yadav in place of the injured Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh and Varun Aaron. Modi meets Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, who came here to attend the cremation of President Pranab Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee. Hasina expressed condolences on the death of Suvra Mukherjee, who passed away on Tuesday after a long illness. Modi thanked her for visiting India to attend the funeral. Source: IANS
