Suzlon Group, behemoth in wind turbine manufacturing, has signed agreement to sell off Senvion SE, its German arm, to Centerbridge Partners at EURO 1 Billion, equivalent to equity value of around Rs. 7,200 crore. As news trickled down to the market, stock price of Suzlon Energy Ltd. witnessed massive surge, to the extent of 7.9 per cent. The proceeds will help the debt ridden company to offload some of its accumulated debt.
Reliance Industries Ltd. has issued statement today that by issuing dollar bonds the company has raised $1 billion. Per the statement, this raised fund will be utilised as capital expenditure. RIL’s 10-year bonds attracted bidders from New York, London, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Oversubscription of the issued dollar bonds, to the tune of 4.5 times, have been reported. RIL’s statement also says that most of the notes were distributed in the US (44 per cent), followed by Asia (31 per cent) and Europe (25 per cent).
Indian bourses have reached new highs today. While BSE Sensex breached the 29,000 points psychological barrier, NSE Nifty touched new high of 8,754.65 points today. Robust fund inflows, encouraging 3rd quarter result, and positive cues from markets abroad were the two reasons why Indian bourses rallied today. At 2.32pm IST, NSE Nifty was trading at 8739.30 and BSE Sensex was trading at 28,936.95 points.
Ben Rhodes, Deputy National Security Adviser, has reportedly said that the US President was a bit surprised when he first got invitation from Indian government asking US President Barack Obama to be the chief guest at Republic Day programme on January 26. However, Rhodes also said that Obama was honoured by getting the information. Sources reveal that the USA is hopeful of furthering ties with India and Republic day meet will be especially helpful in this regard.
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has tweeted that he will be joined by US President Barack Obama on January 27 at an interactive ‘Mann ki Baat’ program of All India Radio. NaMo also asked people to send their questions through Twitter with the hastag #AskObamaModi. People who want to send questions to Obama and Modi can do so by posting queries on 'MyGov' website.
Aam Aadmi Party’s founder member, Shanti Bhushan, has referred selection of Kiran Bedi as Chief Ministerial candidate of BJP as a ‘master stroke’ by the saffron party, which he thinks will divide the sympathisers of Anna Hazare movement against corruption. During an interview, 89-year old Shanti Bhushan has said that if Kiran Bedi becomes CM of Delhi then she will be able to deliver an efficient as well as honest government. He went on to say that Bedi is the best competitor of his party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister of India, has reportedly said today that his government has enough evidence and specific inputs regarding crores of money of Indians stashed in Swiss bank accounts. Jaitley made this statement after meeting Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, Swiss Minister of Finance, at the sidelines of World Economic Forum meet. Indian Finance minister also said that Switzerland has agreed to share information expeditiously on this regard.
Anil Swarup, Coal Secretary, has announced that reallocation of thirty six coal blocks will be done to public sector units from today. Per the announcement, out of the 36 mines, 35 blocks will be given to power companies and 1 block to a PSU in steel sector. It is also learnt that additional blocks will also be allotted but at a later date in accordance with the requests and requirements of the state-run companies. E-auctioning for forty six coal mines will take place in two phases, starting from 14 February 2015.
The tip-off from National Technical Research Organisation along with other intelligence sources point out that the chances of terror attack during US President Barack Obama’s India-visit at the time of Republic Day are very high. Intel reports suggest that members of terrorist groups such as Hizbul Mujahideen, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Lashker-e-Taiba have already entered India through Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Government has taken these multiple intel reports seriously and put India on high alert especially around sensitive installations, border areas, sea lanes, and airports.

Chinese tech sensation Xiaomi has announced sales offer on its Redmi Note 4G handset. The offer will be available for three days, starting from Saturday (January 24) and ending on Monday (January 26). The offer will be available only on Flipkart but they will be without registration. Announcement of the sales offer, which they termed as ‘Republic Day Special’, was done by Xiaomi through its Twitter handle as well as Facebook Page.
Indian ace tennis player Mahesh Bhupati and his men’s doubles partner Jurgen Melzer lost to Diego Schwartzman-Horacio Zeballos duo in straight sets (4-6, 3-6). The game was over in just one hour time, 67 minutes to be precise. Bhupati-Melzer duo committed lots of unforced errors (27), giving their opponents extra mileage in winning the game. Though Bhupati crashed out of the Grand Slam tournament’s doubles’ event, another Indian Rohan Bopanna is still in the fray. He has partnered with Daniel Nestor and is all set to play against Marcos Baghdatis-Marinko Matosevic duo.
Apex court of India will deliver its judgement on 2013 Indian Premier League scam, involving allegations of both match-fixing and betting scandal. The fate of BCCI chief-in-exile N Srinivasan will be sealed today. Srinivasan is defending himself against some serious conflict-of-interest allegations because he was the owner of Chennai Super Kings at IPL and at the same time President of BCCI during the IPL tournament of 2013. The verdict of SC will decide whether Srinivasan can contest for the position of BCCI’s President for another term.
