Participating in a wine-tasting session led to the death of Pukhrimayum Akhtar Hussain, a 35-year-old employee of Mumbai’s renowned Italian bar-cum-restaurant located in Khar. He was training to become a captain at the Yellow Bar All Day at Khar and reportedly tasted around ten different samples in addition to a full glass of wine. The Khar Police has registered an Accidental Death Report and is investigating the case.
Today, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has detained fourteen suspected Islamic State sympathisers. Six of the suspects have been held in Karnataka as part of a multi-location crackdown amidst top-notch security measures ahead of the 67th Republic Day celebrations. Some of the fourteen suspects have been reported to be amongst the 150-odd people who have been on the radar of security establishment for weeks and months.
With current BJP President Amit Shah’s election slated for 24 January, 2016, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, would be hosting a dinner for Shah and his team of office bearers tomorrow at 7 Race Course Road. Currently, Amit Shah is serving half tenure, having taken over from Rajnath Singh (presently serving as the Home Minister of India) whose three-year tenure ended in December 2015.
On his fifth visit to Varanasi after assuming power in May, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the superfast train named Mahamana Express from Varanasi. Running thrice-a-week, the Mahamana Express promises to cover nearly 800 km distance between Varanasi and New Delhi in less than 14 hours. Mahamana Express is the first Express/Mail train to run on the newly-electrified Ghaziabad-Moradabad rail route.
The BSE metal index has witnessed a hike of 4.2 percent with Vedanta as the other top gainer. While the stocks jumped 5.52 percent to reach to Rs. 65.95, firms which advanced 2.35-4.84 percent comprised SAIL, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Hindalco, Hindustan Zinc, JSW Steel, NMDC and NALCO. Persistent buying in banking, oil and gas, capital goods and auto stocks has been quoted as the reason behind the Sensex upsurge.

From today, passengers using the Mumbai Central railway station would be able to access high-speed internet/Google’s Wi-Fi service. Considered as Google’s biggest project in India, the internet service is a part of Google’s tie-up with state-owned RailTel Corp of India to provide Wi-Fi connectivity at 407 stations. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, during his visit to India in December, had promised to cover 100 railway stations by the end of 2016.
Today, the BSE Sensex opened with 200+ points tracking positive global markets. Additionally, the Nifty also scaled up by nearly 80 points to reclaim the 7,350 level. Banking, auto, metal and energy shares paved way for gains in the market. With shares of low cost carrier Indigo falling sharply by 9 per cent, the Indian Rupee witnessed a higher opening at 67.80 per dollar against yesterday’s close of 68.02.
As per a statement issued on behalf of actor-director-producer-singer Farhan Akhar and celebrity hair dresser Adhuna, the couple has mutually and amicably decided to separate after 16 years of marriage. As responsible parents, the couple ascertains to keep their children protected from unwarranted speculation and public glare. Farhan and Adhuna dated for three years before getting married in 2000. They have two children.
Late last night, a speeding Mercedes car ran over people sleeping on a pavement in South Mumbai. The car’s driver who fled from the spot has been arrested. The incident left five people injured and is assumed to have occurred around 2:15 a.m at Mohammed Ali road. The white Mercedes with a Jharkhand number plate drove over a pavement where four women and a child were sleeping. While the injured are being treated at the JJ Hospital, condition of two is stated to be serious.
