The Rajya Sabha's select committee report on the Lokpal and Lokayuktas bill was tabled in the midst of noise in the upper house on Friday.The din was created by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) members who wanted reservation for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in job promotion.The select committee in its recommendations has suggested that the prime minister should be brought under the Lokpal's purview, excluding matters related to external affairs, internal security, atomic energy, and international relations.The bill also allows the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to have a separate director of prosecution, who would be appointed on the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) recommendations.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi stated on Friday that the issue of 2G spectrum allocation losses has backfired on the BJP. A former auditor has said that BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi had influenced the draft CAG report. Murli Manohar Joshi is also the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief.R.P. Singh had given statement to the news channels that the CAG's 2G report was influenced by Joshi and the loss figure mentioned in it was based on presumption and was maintained there even after he deleted it in the draft.Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari specified that in May 2010, when the draft report was formulated by R.P . Singh, the loss was estimated at Rs.20,645 crore. In November 2010, when the report was presented in parliament, the loss was presented as Rs.1 lakh 76 thousand crore.
Finance Minister P. Chidambaram met BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj on Friday to discuss some pending financial legislation which needs to be passed in the ongoing winter session.The winter session, which began on Thursday, faces deadlock over the opposition's demand for voting on the government decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail. Chidambaram was present at the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for BJP leaders, where Swaraj and Jaitley and party leader L. K. Advani were present.
The life insurance premium collection dropped by 2.33 percent during the quarter which ended on Sep 30, 2012 year-on-year, mainly because of slowdown in the economic growth as per Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena.Meena said various factors contributed to the decline in the life insurance premium though the factors were not specified.Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had earlier stated that slowdown in economic growth has negatively affected the performance of banks and other financial institutions.
A century by Cheteshwar Pujara and his unbeaten 7-run stand with Ravichandran Ashwin steered India from trouble on the opening day of the second cricket Test against England in Mumbai. At stumps India were 266/6.Pujara (114 not out) and Ashwin (60 not out) took India to a decent 266 in 90 overs from a shaky 169 for six on a turning Wankhede pitch which allowed spin on the opening day itself. Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar took four crucial wickets.If India get a score of 300, England could be put under pressure as they would bat last on a pitch which will break. India is playing three spinners, including Harbhajan Singh.

The Delhi Jal Board on Friday launched its online bill payment facility so that the people of Delhi will can do away with long queues to pay water bills.An e-kiosk facility was also started with 37 such kiosks at various Delhi Jal Board zonal offices in the capital.This is being perceived as a major step by Delhi Jal Board to provide better services. Plans are in pipeline for providing payment of water bills through mobile phones too.
Ayush Tandon, who has worked in more than 50 ad films and two feature films including Ang Lee's newly launched "Life of Pi", says his dream has come true by acting in films. Ayush essays the character Pi in "Life of Pi", which is a screen adaptation of Yann Martel's Booker Prize winning fantasy adventure novel. He said working with an Oscar-winning director was amazing. Ayush is in the industry since he was five years old and was also a part of the ensemble cast in Vishal Bhardwaj's thriller "7 Khoon Maaf".
The BJP on Thursday announced the list of 84 candidates for the first phase of polls in Gujarat on Dec 13. The list was finalized after the discussion between Modi, Nitin Gadkari, L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. Chief Minister Narendra Modi will contest from Maninagar in Ahmedabad. The list also has the name of Vajubhai Vala, who was minister of finance, labour & employment, in the outgoing cabinet who will contest from Rajkot West. Gujarat BJP president R.C. Faldu will stand from Jamnagar Rural. Koli (fisherman) community leader Parshottam Solanki will be contesting this time from Bhavnagar Rural. Majority of the names in the list are those of sitting legislators, with the exception of seven. No Muslim candidate is there in the list. Out of Gujarat's 13 constituencies six reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates find a mention in the list. 14 of the 26 Scheduled Tribe (ST) constituencies are also there. Additionally there are 10 women candidates in the list. The second phase of polling will be on Dec 19. The result will be out on Dec 20.
Parliament's winter session started on Thursday with the row over FDI in trade and reservation for Dalits as well as tribals in promotions paralyzing the proceedings of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Trinamool Congress's no-confidence motion against the government was rejected in the Lok Sabha due to absence of required support from opposition MPs.Mamata Banerjee blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left for not suporting her motion over foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail trade.Minutes before the session began, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the government wanted to discuss all issues in parliament, and asked the political parties to let the house function smoothly. The winter session will end on Dec 20 and within 16 working days the government has a tough agenda of 35 bills -- 25 listed for consideration and passing and 10 for introduction -- the government wants to pass major bills.
With an aim at speedy execution of rail projects, the government on Thursday gave approval to a policy which would initiate private participation in boosting industrial development and enhancing freight traffic.The approval to this was given by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.The policy would ensure in building the critical links which are not there in the railway network and would ensure evacuation from ports, mines, big industrial units and plants.It will also enhance industrial development of the country and strengthen freight traffic.
The government has taken initiatives to reduce expenditure, which includes a ban on holding meetings and conferences in five-star hotels and putting a curb on foreign travels, to control the fiscal deficit at 5.3 percent of the gross domestic product in this financial year as per Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.Mandatory cut of non-plan expenditure by 10 percent in the current financial year and discipline in fiscal transfers to states, public sector undertakings and autonomous bodies are also some of the measures.Ministries, departments have been advised not to make advance payments for the goods and services being procured.
Vijay Mallya has stated that 50 million pounds will be invested into Sahara Force India team for an improved performance in the 2013 Formula One season. He said the team had its best performance in terms of points scored as it is heading towards the final race of 2012 and is seventh in the team standings with 99 points at Sao Paulo. He said that the team got better every year and next season capital investment should also be looked into and that is the reason why the board has approved a 50 million capital investment programme for the team.

Actress Vidya Balan took Emraan Hashmi for a ride in a Nano on the streets of Mumbai during the shooting of the film "Ghanchakkar".The two actors traveled through the streets of Mumbai in a yellow Nano as if they wanted to explore something in the middle of the night. Manish Hariprasad, Creative Director, Studios, Disney UTV stated,"The scene required Vidya driving Emraan across Mumbai. This is one of the crucial scenes in the film as Emraan and Vidya - the onscreen couple - search for something that they desperately need." The movie is directed by Rajkumar Gupta who directed "No One Killed Jessica".
