It has been analyzed that the CAD or the current account deficit was lesser than what was estimated and it stood at $21.8 billion or 4.9% of the GDP in the quarter from Apr-Jun. But the cause for concern was that it was more than what it was in the Jan-Mar period that is at $18.17 billion which was 3.6% of GDP. There were predictions from five economists that the CAD would increase to $23-$25 billion. There are though expectations that this would be lesser in the coming months as government has initiated various measures to curb the import of gold. Further the weak rupee and easing global situation will further help the exports. In fact the balance of payments was negative in the quarter ending on June at $346 million whereas in the March quarter it was $2.68 billion. The CAD had impacted the economy adversely with increase in the capital outflows in the past few months and rupee dipped to almost 20% in 2013.

It has been discovered according to a new research that sensors there in smartphones and laptops can help in the detection of moderate and large earthquakes. This can prove quite beneficial in regions with dense population and can offer vast information. The micro-electro-mechanical systems or MEMS accelerometer tap the motion in three different directions and accordingly it tells the phone’s screen to move horizontally or vertically when the phone tilts. The laptop sensor detects when there is a movement of fall and brings the hard drive to safe mode to prevent impact. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy tested to find out whether these can record the movement during earthquake. They did find out that the MEMS chips recorded the movement similar to a standard device.
