Landour


Landour near Dehradun is a cantonment town with beautiful landscape and numerous pretty cottages. Located few kilometers above Mussoorie, the hilly town of Landour is surrounded on one side by thick oak woods bordering the Landour Cantonment. The other side is occupied by the old deodars. Landour is very quiet and peaceful with narrow roads and pathways zig-zagging the Landour hills. The beautiful hill town of Landour was taken over by the British in the mid 19th century where they made hospitals and sent wounded soldiers to be cared by devoted nurses.

There are 2 beautiful churches in Landour, one is Kellogs near Sister's Bazaar and another is St Paul's at Char Dukaan. The accommodation system of Landour is not that advanced as the army rule has stopped hotels from mushrooming in Landour. The 'Rokeby' arranges accommodation for foreign students that come to learn Hindi in Landour School of Languages. Char Dukaan is a place near Landour that offer two-bedroom cottages to the tourists.

Landour has a large Tibetan settlement. The eateries around Landour offer varied good things to eat such as delicious home-made pizzas, pasta sauce, peanut butter, locally-produced preserves and tins of ham and sausages and home-made cheddar cheese. You can enjoy the aura of tea in small teashops in the hill town and enjoy watching the Landour people as they go by.

Landour summers are light and breezy while the rainy season is cloudy and you can see the clouds enter your room through the windows and the town becomes brilliant green. Landour winters are marked by snowfall when the temperature drops to zero degree centigrade and the Landour town is covered with a glistening white blanket.
