Delhi Embroidery

Delhi embroidery is a mixture of diverse culture, which enriched it with its significant contribution in various fields. Moreover embroidery has always been a major area of interest for Indian women. Kantha, Kinari, Zardozi, Mirror work, Phulkari are some of the various forms of Indian embroidery. The Muslim rule in India have left a significant mark still evident in the Delhi culture. Kinari and Zardozi are the two forms of Indian embroidery, which is widely practiced in Delhi.

Kinari and Zardosi

Both Kinari and Zardozi were predominant among the Muslim craftsmen. Kinari is used to stitch the edges to create a majestic design. Appliqué is a form of needle work to design the cloth by overlying other fabrics on top of each other. The edges of the overlying fabrics are stitched with needle and thread. Mainly geometrical and floral patterns are followed and are of varied shapes and sizes. The Kinari bazaar in Delhi is one of the ideal place for purchasing Kinari items. The market specializes in wedding accessories made of Kinari designs.

Zardozi is another form, which derives its name from Persia. Zardozi is a metal work woven with golden and silver thread. In contemporary times copper wires and silk threads are used instead of gold and silver threads. However Zardozi dresses were mostly worn by the kings and members of the royal family. Pearls and precious gems were also studded along with the Zardozi work to make it more attractive and elegant.
