The flag bearer of the development of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, Delhi Development Authority came into being in 1957 under the provision of Delhi Development Act, "to promote and secure the development of Delhi". DDA owe its birth to the committee under the chairmanship of Sh G D Birla, which recommended the establishment of an authority to control the development of burgeoning population of Delhi. As a result of the recommendations of the committee Delhi Development (Provisional) Authority came into existence in 1955, which gave way to the Delhi Development Authority. Since its inception till date Delhi Development Authority has been one of the major planning bodies in Delhi in the following fields:

Planning: Planning, the process of preparing an overview of the development of city is one of the fortes of the Delhi Development Authority. One of the largest town planners in India, Delhi Development Authority guides the development of the city by preparing various plans and policies such as Master Plan, Zonal Plan and Action Area Plan. The Master Plan is the biggest achievement of the planning team of Delhi Development Authority. It is the blue print of policies, development code and space requirements for various socio- economic activities during the stipulated time span.
Housing: Delhi Development Authority has become a name synonymous with the housing infrastructure in Delhi today. Entering into the housing arena in 1967, DDA has provided more than a million houses to the city dwellers. About half the population of Delhi resides in the houses developed by Delhi Development Authority.
Lands: Land is the vital part of any developmental project. Delhi Development Authority buys the land for the development of various housing projects. The land is then developed into residential and commercial properties, which is auctioned by the Delhi Development Authority to the residents of the city.
Sports: Apart from Planning, Housing and Lands, Delhi Development Authority also adorns the hat of sports developer. It drafts various sports schemes to encourage the budding players of the city. DDA also organizes various state level tournaments and provide platform for these players to showcase their talent.
Greens: With more than 19% area under the vegetation cover, Delhi is one of the greenest cities in India. Delhi Development Authority maintains this green cover of Delhi by developing various parks. Green areas are know to be the lungs of the city and Delhi Development Authority has the development of two such areas viz Kamla Nehru Ridge and Yamuna River Front to its credit.
