As the composition of population in Delhi was increasing day by day, so it was felt necessary to establish a High Court at the Capital.
History: At the beginning the Delhi High Court besides exercising its power over Delhi, used to exercise its authority over Himachal Pradesh until the enforcement of Himachal Pradesh Act of 1970. The Delhi High Court had a Bench of Himachal Pradesh at Shimla in the building of Ravenswood.
It was actually on 21st March, 1919 that the Lahore High Court Judicature was formed handing over the authority over Punjab and Delhi which continued till 1947. According to the High Courts Order (Punjab), a new High Court was instituted at East Punjab on 15th August, 1947. But it later on moved to Chandigarh in 1954. Finally in 1966 the Delhi High Court was established.
