India has 21 high courts among which Delhi High Court is one. The Delhi High Court came into emergence on 31st of October 1966, with four judges namely, K.S. Hedge, the then Chief Justice, Justice H.R. Khanna, Justice I.D Dua and Justice S.K. Kapur.
The High Court of Lahore was established on 21st March 1919, at Lahore. It had jurisdiction over Delhi and Punjab, which lasted till the partition of India in 1947. On 15th of August 1947, a new High Court for East Punjab was established which started working from Shimla. Later on the High Court of Punjab was moved to Chandigarh in 1954-55.
Soon the need to establish a high court at Delhi was felt due to Delhi's huge population and other factors. Thus the Parliament decided to establish a new high court at Delhi following which Delhi High Court Act, 1966 was enacted on 5th September, 1966. In the year 1966, the High Court of Punjab which was shifted to Chandigarh, was set up as the Delhi High Court. Originally, till 1971, the Delhi High Court exercised jurisdiction on Himachal Pradesh also besides Delhi.
