Education In Delhi


Education in Delhi has undergone phenomenal changes with the expansion of population. The capital city of Delhi is famous for providing excellent educational opportunities to its pupil. Delhi is the hub of some of the renowned educational institutions that offer training in diverse fields.

Researching on the education scene in Delhi, the Economic Survey of Delhi, 2001 estimated that the literacy rate of the city is 81.2%. The Directorate of Education, Delhi mainly administrates the schools and higher educational institutions. The NCT Government and other private organization also look after the educational institutes of Delhi.

The capital city provides diverse educational opportunities. The well reputed educational institutions in the city attract students from different parts of India and the neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan, who enrol themselves in varied categories of subjects such as humanities, technology, management, and so on .

Every year thousands of foreign students from underdeveloped and developing countries come here for taking up higher education in Delhi. Subjects like Hindustani classical music, Animal husbandry, Buddhist studies, Agriculture,Indian philosophy, Fine Arts, Veterinary sciences, Sanskrit, Medical Science, Engineering, Law and other Indian Languages are taught in some of the best universities across the city. The city is a good educational destination for the students for it has some of the best institutions located here. Some of the leading institutions of the Capital are Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, IIT Delhi, Delhi School of Economics, St Stephen's College, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi College of Engineering to name a few. The Economic survey of Delhi 2001 recorded 165 colleges in Delhi. Among them 8 are engineering colleges, 5 are medical colleges. In Delhi there are seven deemed universities, one among which is an Open University. The top world renowned universities of Delhi are the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Hamdard, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Indira Gandhi National Open University.
