Delhi Ridge


Delhi Ridge, which is popularly known as the 'green lungs of the capital’, is located in the southeastern part of Tughlaqabad, close to the Bhatti mines. Delhi Ridge is actually the northern branch of the Aravallis and forms one of the most important geographical regions of Delhi.

Importance of Delhi Ridge



Made of quartzite rocks, this ridge covers an area of about 35 kilometers and then thins out at the western Yamuna bank. The Delhi Ridge is of strategic importance for the national territory of Delhi. This is because it acts as a guard against the heat that originates from on the west of the Aeolian Desert. This ridge also acts as a catalyst in maintaining the summer temperature around it at bearable limits, when the rest of the city of suffering from intense heat spells. This ridge is considered to be an important part of the capital’s environmental heritage. A number of civilizations have lived in this naturally beautiful and self sufficient region of Delhi over the years. This ridge is also an ideal place for the bird watchers.

Delhi Ridge Divisions



Delhi Ridge is divided into four distinct parts. The four regions of Delhi Ridge are :-

  • The southern ridge
  • The south central ridge
  • The central ridge, also known as the new ridge
  • The northern or the old Delhi ridge
