From 1984 to 1989 Delhi Chief Minister, Smt. Sheila Dikshit represented the Kannauj Parliamentary Constituency and from 1986 to 1989 she was a minister of the Union Government. Serving as the President Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee the present day Delhi Chief Minister won the 1998 Assembly elections.
The political career of Smt. Sheila Dikshit passed through many eventful phases. In the year 1990 Smt. Sheila Dikshit was put behind the bars for 23 whole days for voicing against the tortures done on women. This Chief Minister of Delhi has also held a prime position from 1984 to 1989 in the U N Commission on Status of Women. Being the secretary of Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust Smt. Sheila Dikshit takes keen interest in the development of rural handicrafts.
