MD or Doctor of Medicine is a postgraduate degree which is offered by various universities and medical institutes in India. MD is a qualifying degree or professional degree in many nations.
In India, the MD (Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine) degree symbolizes the initial phase of education (graduation) which is necessary to become certified as a medical practitioner. At the same time, the Doctor of Medicine degree is a degree of higher education or master's degree, which symbolizes a special area of expertise.
Current Scenario of MD in India
Once the students pass their MD degree, they have a host of employment opportunities before them. They can work in both private and public hospitals as physicians. The all India MD Entrance exam is conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. It is a competitive entrance examination which is held in test centers around the country. The idea is to conduct an all India entrance test for admission to the MD (Doctor of Medicine) course on open merit. This entrance test is held to fill around 50% of the seats of different master degree courses like MS, MD, MDS and Postgraduate Diploma courses. The examination is usually held on the 1st/2nd Sunday of January annually.
Students who have scored at least 55% marks in total in all the MD examinations are eligible for admission to the Doctor of Medicine course. The students need to sit for a written test which will comprise multiple choice questions on every subject field of MD.
Entrance examination pattern of the Doctor of Medicine course
The paper for the entrance examination will consist of objective type or multiple choice questions. The entrance exam paper is usually split into two and they are as follows:
- Special paper
- General paper
There will be 240 questions and the duration of the exam is 3 hours for every paper. There will be a higher specialties paper which have a duration of 1.5 hours and it will contain 120 questions.
Students can purchase the application forms for the Common Entrance Test on their own from the particular institute. They can also collect it via post. They can download it from the official website of the institute as well. After filling out the form, students should send it right away.
