The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, was set up in the year 1960 as the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. It was one among the 1st 8 Regional Engineering Colleges to be set up in India during the 1st 5 Year Plan. Formerly the college for technical and engineering education had the Kashmir University affiliation. In the year 2003 the institute was upgraded as a National Institute of Technology and was also given the status of a Deemed University. The institute, popularly known as NIT-S or NIT-Srinagar was recognized as an institute of National importance on August 15, 2007.

The mission of the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is to create top class with technical skill, good social character, leadership quality, creativity and self confidence for the growth of the country. This leading educational institution nurtures the students by imparting high quality technical education and training which would thereby produce top class engineers in India.
