Overview/HistoryThe Feast of Our Lady of Miracles is a festival in North Goa, which brings together thousands of people belonging to both the religions of Christianity as well as Hinduism. This secular nature of the feast makes it different from the other famous fair cum festivals of India. This Goan festival reflects the existing respect among the varied faiths, which are prevalent in this smallest state of the country. The Feast of Our Lady of Miracles of Goa takes place after 16 days from the day of Easter every year. Initially, the feast was held on the month of May's 4th Sunday. However, from the year 2008, the date of this feast got changed as that day used to coincide with one of the solemnities, when no feast can be held.
CelebrationThis annual festival is celebrated mainly with a fair. The specialty of this fair is the numerous food stalls, which serves various types of the local delicacies of the state of Goa. Apart from that people, especially women and children are seen finely dressed during this time. More than 1000 devotees with the different religious faiths, who reside mostly in the area of North Goa, flock together near the statue of Our Lady which is kept outside this church of Goa. These Goan devotees venerate the statue with candles and garlands. Starting from 5 am, different masses were held at different times of the day. Among them, generally, the English mass starts at around 9 am whereas, the high mass starts at about 10 am. Being a nighttime fest, this festival includes many kinds of services that are related to the church.
