Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways


Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways has two departments namely Department of Road Transport and Highways and Department of Shipping. The former is an apex body dealing with all the matters related to the road transit system of India.
The department has been entrusted with the responsibility of improving, planning and developing the transportation system in India. It has introduced several policies and schemes for free movement of vehicles on the National Highways and roads of the country.

The department does all this in discussion with the other Ministries of the Central Government of India. Shri T. R. Balu is the Minister in Charge of the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways-India. The Department of Highways and Road Transport comprises of two wings namely, Transport Wing and Road Wings. The Transport Wing performs several functions like:
  1. Proper monitoring of the Motor Vehicle Legislation
  2. Motor vehicles insurance
  3. Execution of Road Safety Plan annually
  4. Offering grants to the NGO’s, according to guidelines
  5. Implementation of the 1950, Road Transport Corporations Act
  6. Organizing campaigns for road safety and others
The roads wing of the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways deals with maintenance and improvement of the National Highways and the roads of the country. The department is also entrusted with several other functions like:
  1. Provides guidance on the technical part of road and bridge construction
  2. Helps the State Government financially for construction of roads
  3. Provides guidelines for construction of bridges and roads

The other department (Department of Shipping) of the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways of India has been entrusted with the duty of construction of ports, repair of ships, and development of national waterways. Shipbuilding is another major concern of the department. It launches several programs and plans schemes for the implementation of the projects. This department of the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways handles all the issues related with Maritime transit of India.
