Gujarat Districts and Cities



Gujarat districts and cities are the administrative subdivisions of the state of Gujarat in India. The state is made up of 26 districts, which are home to many cities, villages, and towns.

Districts of Gujarat



On May 1, 1960 the state of Gujarat was formed by joining 17 northern districts of the erstwhile State of Bombay. Subsequently, these districts were again split into cities and other regions. As of 2007, the state is home to 26 districts and they are as follows:

  1. Ahmedabad District
    Ahmedabad district consists of the city of Ahmedabad, which is the 7th biggest city of the country and other regions. The entire district is split into various talukas such as Daskroi, Barwala, Dhandhuka, Dholka, Sanand, Detroj, Ranpur, Bavla, Viramgam, and Mandal.

    Ahmedabad district is bordered by Sabarkantha, Mehsana, and Gandhinagar districts in the north, Bhavnagar district and the Gulf of Cambay to the south, Kheda district in the east, and Surendranagar district in the west.

  2. Amreli District
    The headquarters of the Amreli district are located at Amreli. Popular tourist attractions in Amreli district are as follows:
    >Banaskantha District
    The administrative headquarters of the Banaskantha district is Palanpur, which is also the biggest city in the region. The district of Banaskantha can be divided into 12 talukas and they are as follows:
    Bhabhar, Amirgadh, Danta, Dantiwada, Deodar, Deesa, Palanpur, Dhanera, Tharad, Sihori, (Kankrej), Vav and Vadgam.

  3. Bharuch District
    Bharuch district is also called as Broach. The population and area of the district are similar to Boston in the United States.

  4. Bhavnagar District
    The administrative headquarters of the Bhavnagar district are located in Bhavnagar city. The districts of Surendranagar and Ahmedabad edge it to the north; Rajkot and Amreli border it to the west, and the Gulf of Cambay edges toward the south and the east. The district houses approximately 800 villages.

  5. Dahod District
    Dahod district is also referred to as Dohad district. The city of Dahod serves as the administrative headquarters of the district. It is bordered by the districts of Vadodara to the south, Panchmahal to the west, the district of Banswara (Rajasthan) to the north and northeast, and Alirajpur and Jhabua districts of Madhya Pradesh to the east and southeast.

  6. Dang District
    The administrative headquarters of the Dang district are located in Ahwa. The district is the least populated district in the state.

  7. Gandhinagar district
    The administrative headquarters of the Gandhinagar district are situated in Gandhinagar, the capital of the state. The district is bounded by the districts of Kheda in the southeast, Sabarkantha in the northeast, Mehsana to the northwest, and Ahmedabad to the southwest. The district is home to three tehsils (Dehgam, Kalol INA, and Mansa) and three suburbs - Motera, Chandkheda, and Adalaj together with 216 villages. Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Gandhinagar are the main business hubs of the state. The revered Akshardham Temple is located in Sector 20 of the city. The city is known as the Heart of Gujarat.

  8. Jamnagar District
    Jamnagar district is situated on the southern shores of the Gulf of Kutch. Dwarka, a renowned religious destination, is a part of this district.

  9. Junagadh District
    Junagadh district is bordered by Porbandar district to the northwest, Rajkot district to the north, and Amreli district to the east. The Arabian Sea lies to the south and west. The district houses the famous Girnar mountain range, which is a pilgrimage hub for Jains and Hindus.

  10. Kheda District
    The administrative headquarters of Kheda district are located in Kheda city. The district is bordered by Sabarkantha and Gandhinagar in the north, Ahmedabad in the west, Panchmahal in the east, and Vadodara and Anand in the south. Cotton and tobacco are the main agricultural produces in this district.

  11. Kutch District
    Kutch district is the biggest district of India. To the west and south, the district is bordered by the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Kachchh. The administrative headquarters are located in Bhuj.

  12. There are various wildlife sanctuaries in the district such as Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, Kutch Bustard Sanctuary, Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary, Chari-Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve, and Banni Grasslands Reserve.

  13. Mehsana District
    Mehsana district shares its boundaries with Surendranagar and Patan districts to the west, Banaskantha district to the north, Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts to the south, and Sabarkantha district to the east. Important towns of the district include Bahucharaji, Vijapur, Unjha, Modhera, Kalol, Vadnagar, Visnagar, Kadi, Jotana and Khadalpur, Kherva, and Sanganpur.

  14. Narmada District
    The Narmada district is bordered by Maharashtra to the east, Vadodara to the north, Bharuch to the west, and Tapi to the south. The district is made up of four talukas and they are Sagbara, Nandod, Tilakwada, and Dediyapada. The district headquarters are situated at Rajpipla.

  15. Navsari District
    Navsari district is famous for the Dudhia Talao and Ashapuri Temple. There are many famous schools, universities, and colleges in the district.

  16. Panchmahal District
    Panchmahal district is bordered by Dahod district to the east and northeast, Kheda district to the west, Vadodara district to the south (also southwest and southeast), and Sabarkantha district to the northwest. The five subdivisions of the district are as follows - Dahod, Godhra, Kalol, Halol, and Jhalod.

  17. Patan district
    Patan district is situated in North Gujarat. It is bordered by Banaskantha in the north and northeast, Surendranagar to the south, Mehsana to the east, and southeast and Kutch district to the west. The district houses talukas like Santalpur, Patan, Siddhpur, Radhanpur, Sami, Harij, and Chanasma.

  18. Porbander District
    Porbander district is the hometown of Mahatma Gandhi. It is bordered by Jamnagar to the north, the Arabian Sea to the west, and Junagadh to the south.

  19. Rajkot District
    Rajkot district is the third most developed district in the state. The district is bordered by Kutch district to the north, Junagadh and Amreli districts to the south, Bhavnagar and Surendranagar districts to the east, and Jamnagar district to the west. The district consists of 14 talukas - Morbi, Maliya, Paddhari, Tankara, Dhoraji, Lodhika, Rajkot, Wankaner, Upleta, Jam Kandorna, Kotda Sangani, Jetpur, Gondal and Jasdan.

  20. Sabarkantha District
    The administrative headquarters of the Sabarkantha district are located in Himmatnagar. The district is bordered by Mehsana and Banaskantha to the west, Rajasthan to the northeast, Panchmahal to the east, and Kheda and Gandhinagar to the south.

  21. Surat District
    The Surat district is bordered by Narmada and Bharuch to the north and Dang and Navsari to the south. It is the second most populated district in the state. The district is famous for the Vansada National Park.

  22. Surendranagar District
    Surendranagar district is also called as Zalawad. Major cities in the district include Halvad, Dhrangadhra, Limbdi, Wadhwan, Lakhtar, Chuda, Sayla, Muli, Thangadh and Tarnetar. The textiles industry of the state is quite developed.

  23. Tapi District
    The administrative headquarter of the Tapi district is the Vyara town. Lying in South Gujarat, the district houses five talukas - Songadh, Vyara, Nizar, Uchchal, and Valod.

  24. Vadodara District
    The Vadodara district is bounded by Dahod and Panchmahal to the north, Narmada and Bharuch to the south, Kheda and Anand to the west, and Madhya Pradesh to the east. The administrative headquarters are located in Baroda.

  25. Valsad District
    Valsad district is bordered by Dang to the east, Navsari to the north, and Maharashtra to the south. The biggest city in the district is Vapi. The five talukas in the district are Pardi, Valsad, Kaprada, Dharampur, and Umbergaon.

Major cities in Gujarat are the following:
  • Surat - Also known as Diamond City.
  • Ahmedabad - the former capital. The commercial capital of the state, it is also known as the Manchester of the East.
  • Gandhinagar - Administrative capital of the state.
  • Vadodara - Dubbed as Oxford of Gujarat.
  • Rajkot - Erstwhile capital of the state of Saurashtra.
  • Bhavnagar - A major industrial hub.
  • Junagadh - Famous for the old age laws of Emperor Ashoka engraved on rock.
