The city was named Gandhinagar in the honor of Mahatma Gandhi-the renowned Indian freedom fighter and father of the nation.

The capital city is highly accessible by public bus from Ahmedabad. The ticket costs 5 rupees. The buses leave from Lal Darwaja or from the numerous stops of Ashram Road.
