Junagadh


Junagadh in Gujarat is located at the base of the picturesque Girnar Hill. It is the point of departure for the tourists to the Gir Forest.

Girnar Hill has got a number of temples. Junagadh is quite fascinating a town with a number of old buildings. However very few tourists come to this place. The major reason behind this is the lack of publicity. People are perhaps not aware of the serenity and the aesthetic beauty of Junagadh.

The city of Junagadh is named after the fort that encloses the old city. This place dates back to 250 BC. The edicts of Ashoka near the town exemplifies the marvelous antiquity of this site. The Junagadh fort is unique and wonderful in its style and architecture. It speaks aloud the rich history of the region.

You can reach Junagadh by any of the following means:
  • Bus : The time table at the STC stand is written entirely in Gujarati. Buses leave for Rajkot every 30 minutes, for Sasan Gir every hour. There are also the regular departures to other places of the state.

  • Train : The Somnath mail and Girnar Express run between Ahmedabad and Veraval via Junagadh. In Veraval, there are additional services. The Veraval-Rajkot mails run between the Rajkot and Veraval via Junagadh.

If you want a sightseeing around Junagadh you take a bus to Girnar Hill. You can take an auto-rickshaw as well. Junagadh's taxis are mostly the 1940s vintage Ford Plymouths and there are dozens of them.
