Porbandar


Porbandar lies on the seashore in between Dwarka and Somnath. As the epic goes it is the home of Sudama Brahman, the friend of Lord Krishna. Porbandar in Gujarat was known as the Sudama Puri. You will find here a Sudama Temple.

Porbandar is the place where the 'Father of the Nation', Mahatma Gandhi was born in October 1869. Kirti Mandir is the name of the house which witnessed the birth of the great leader. It is a popular tourist spot in the middle of town. People from each and every part of the globe come here to feel the pulse of the Indian freedom movement. Gandhi's family left the house in 1881. Whenever you go to visit Kirti Mandir in Porbandar you should see:
  • a swastika in the house marking Gandhiji's birth spot

  • a small bookshop in the building next door
It is the rich history of Porbandar of Gujarat which attracts people. Nevertheless, it is a comparatively calm town and visitors are less than the rest of the tourist spots in the state.

  • Air: The airport is 5 km from town
  • Train: The Saurashtra Express goes to Mumbai via Rajkot , Ahmedabad , and Vadodara. A morning local train goes to Rajkot and Jamnagar.
  • Bus: There are regular buses to Dwarka , Veraval , Junagadh , Diu , and Rajkot .
